Ward off winter skin

It's starting to get cold and you can feel the difference in dry, itchy skin. But there are ways to protect yourself and ensure your skin stays its best this winter.

Winter brings cold, but romantic weather, perfect for cuddling up with your man on a fireside rug. Crisp mornings and frosty nights, streets covered in bare trees and the cold wind making your face tingle may all be fun and refreshing, but they're also sure to cause dry skin, chapped lips and a flaky scalp. Low temperatures and humidity, indoor heating, dry recycled air and outdoor exposure contribute to making skin lose its vital, healthy glow.

Cold, dry winter air is very damaging to skin because it literally removes all moisture. That explains why skin tends to feel itchy and dry, and may even crack painfully, during the colder months. In addition to being uncomfortable, these ailments can be embarrassing and cause you to dread going out. But there are ways to overcome winter skin: with a few handy tips and regular care, you can confront the chilliest of weather with a soft, supple and glowing face day after day. Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about winter skincare and tips for "winter-proofing" your complexion:

Should sunscreen be applied during winter?
Yes, make sure you apply sunscreen every morning. Winter sun, even if it feels weak, can be as harsh and destructive as summer heat, especially in our South African climate. The product you use must have a SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30, as well as UVA and UVB protection. Sunscreens contain moisturisers, which prevent skin from drying out.

Why does skin become dry in winter?
The humidity level in the atmosphere falls drastically in winter, resulting in loss of skin moisture. This inevitably causes dry skin, chapped lips and scalp irritations. People with oily skins are affected less than those with naturally dry skin, but everyone needs to choose a skincare routine that protects them from the dehydrating winter conditions.

How can I cure chapped lips?
The first rule of winter lipcare is: don't lick your lips! In cold weather, particularly, frequent lip-licking (something most of us do without even thinking about it) can lead to dry, cracked, painful lips. That's because as the saliva on your lips evaporates, it takes your lips' natural moisture with it – and, since lips don't have oil glands, their natural moisture is scarce to begin with. Once you've sworn off licking, here are some other tricks to keep your lips smooth and soft:

  • Use a lip balm to help seal in moisture. Avoid flavoured products; you may just end up smacking your lips, unable to resist the great taste. Try Vaseline Lip Guard.

  • Exfoliate your lips once a week. Wet a soft toothbrush (skip the paste!) and gently brush your lips in a circular motion.

  • Apply and re-apply a thick, moisturising lip balm. For already chapped lips, look for a medicated balm containing cooling, pain-reducing ingredients such as camphor, menthol, and phenol. Elizabeth Arden's Eight-Hour Cream is perfect for protecting and keeping lips moist.

How can I prevent dry feet and hands?
Apply olive oil on your hands and feet every night to avoid dry and flaky skin. Applying a moisturising lotion also does the trick. Use moisturisers from reputable companies, as these have longer durability. Moisturising bars and glycerine-based soaps can also help. Try these tips to help keep dry winter skin at bay:

  • Use a mild facial cleanser. Dove and Johnson & Johnson are both good, non-drying choices.

  • Switch to a richer facial moisturiser. Drier times call for more intense moisturisers. Avoid exfoliating – the dry air in many homes actually exfoliates skin for you. This is another reason why you need to moisturise.

  • Apply moisturiser to damp skin after showering. After patting – not wiping off! – your body with a towel, rub on a rich cream.

When adapting your winter skincare regimen remember to factor in your individual skin type and geographic location. If you live in an arid area of the country, it's obviously essential that you give your skin the benefit of maximum moisture and protection. If you're lucky enough to live in a coastal region where winter is humid, you still need an adequate skincare regimen. Remember, when it comes to winter, beauty really is skin-deep!
