Summer beauty guide

Before you embrace summer here's what you need to do to look your best on those melting days…

Heat protection for hair
Summer means holidays at the beach or taking a plunge into a pool to beat the heat. You need to take special care to protect your hair, or your crowning glory may become brittle, dry and riddled with split ends by the end of the season.

If you’re planning to spend a lot of time in the pool, prevent your hair from getting excessively dry as a result of over-exposure to chlorinated water.

Use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner immediately after a swim to combat any dryness and damage.

Do a hot oil hair treatment, followed by a shampoo, about three times a month. The oil treatment offers a moisture surge and adds shine, while the shampoo will remove any residue of chlorine, salt, sunscreen and styling products.

Talk to your hairdresser about creams and spray treatments that offer sun protection, and use them regularly.

Remember, hair colour treatments fade faster when exposed to the direct rays of the sun. Use a shampoo and conditioner formulated especially to protect colour-treated hair.

Summer skincare
Taking care of your skin in summer is important. Every individual has a unique skin type, but there are four broad classifications: dry, normal, oily and combination. Before applying face creams and cosmetics, you should ensure you know your skin type.

To find this out, do a simple home-test. All you need are a few strips of tissue paper. This test should be performed first thing in the morning. As soon as you get up, rub the strips of tissue paper gently across your face, covering your forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. If the strips are completely clean and transparent, then you have dry skin.

If the strips used on the forehead, nose and chin are greasy, but those on the cheeks are clean, then you have combination skin. If all the strips appear greasy, then you have oily skin.

Once you know your skin type, it’s easy for you to follow a specific skincare routine. Caring for your skin is essential and will boost your self-esteem. You’ll also reap the benefits of good skincare well into your 30s, 40s and beyond!

Make-up
"This weather is too hot to handle!", "I’m absolutely boiling" and "My make-up is all smudged!" are the frequent wails of women all over the country during the summer months. Make-up is often used to highlight your facial features, but wearing make-up now might make your skin feel oily and clogged-up. Try these alternatives to overcome your problems:

  • When buying make-up, look for "oil-free" and "non-clogging" products. Always stick to oil-free and oil-absorbing foundations.
  • Before applying face powder, blot out excess sweat and oil with a tissue. Then apply the powder lightly with a few brush strokes.
  • Try to resist the temptation to camouflage your pimples with a heavy-make up base.
  • Keep lips protected and moisturised. Use a lip balm and consider switching to a moisture-rich lipstick.
  • Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 every day to help protect against sun exposure; re-apply it after swimming or sweating.
  • Try to use waterproof make-up, which stays on longer and won’t smudge – even when you sweat!
