Lash report

In your kit of beauty essentials, mascara is second only to lipstick – it frames your eyes and puts the finishing touch to any look.

Which formula works best?
Mascara that thickens or lengthens usually contains microfibres, also called filaments, to build up and add length to lashes. However, after a long day's wear these filaments can become unstuck and messy. They can also end up in your eyes, causing irritation. If your eyes are sensitive, avoid those that contain such fibres and opt instead for mascara that curls lashes. On the packaging of some mascaras there will be an indication that it is `filament free.

If you have particularly thin lashes, look out for mascara that contains silicon-based ingredients - great for giving volume. For short lashes, select mascara with a brush that has closely set bristles. Such a brush effectively separates lashes and coats each one, to create the illusion of length. Mascaras that give the eyes definition work best if you prefer a natural look.

Waterproof or not?
Waterproof mascara is ideal for rainy days and weddings or other occasions when you might be shedding a few tears, but it's best not worn daily. It's more difficult to remove, which means that there is added wear and tear on the skin around the eyes. Regular use can also dry out your lashes.

Tips

  • To prevent clumps, particularly when the mascara is new, lightly dab a tissue on the brush before you apply the mascara.
  • If your mascara tends to end up as dark rings under your eyes, consider the eye cream or concealer that you are using. The oil-based types can cause mascara to smudge. To prevent this, use an ear bud to apply a touch of powder along your lower lash line.
  • When you apply mascara, hold the brush to the roots of the lashes and lightly wiggle it around before you coat the full length of the lash in long sweeps. It's the mascara at the root of the lash that makes it look longer.

    New look
A new trend has introduced mascara with two applicator brushes - one for applying a base coat (usually colourless or white) that conditions, lengthens and thickens lashes; the other for applying the colour pigment (mascara as we know it) over that foundation. Examples include L'Oréal Double Extend Mascara and Revlon Lash Fantasy.

We feel that while these mascaras do offer extra length and volume, they take quite long to apply. Rimmel has an innovative applicator: a small comb instead of the usual brush. Rimmel Extreme Definition Mascara is great for definition and the result is a completely natural look for daywear.
