Know the pitfalls
One of the most common (and obvious) causes of driver fatigue is sleep-deprivation. Chances are that in the build up to your holidays you have been burning the candle at both ends to get your work done, and complete the packing and preparations for your holiday.

Couple this with the decision to hit the road in the wee hours, and you have driver burnout in the making. Experts suggest rather leaving at a reasonable hour, so as not to start your journey tired. At the very least, make sure you are well rested whatever time you leave home.

Long monotonous stretches of road can be hypnotic, and lull you into a state of sleepiness. You should never drive for periods of longer than two hours at a time. Rather make frequent stops or switch drivers every two hours.

Anyone who has tried to stay up all night will know that the hours between 2am and 6am are the most difficult to stay alert; as is siesta time after lunch, between 2pm and 4pm. Be aware of this, and avoid travelling between these times.

A large meal is sure to make you sleepy so keep it light on the road and rather opt for regular, smaller snacks.

Avoid taking medication that can cause drowsiness. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are on medication and swap it for something that does not have a sedative effect.

Drive with your lights on – day or night – as this increases your visibility on the road.

Plan ahead
Study a map and estimate how long your journey will take. For particularly long drives, consider treating yourself to an overnight stop.

Be sensible
If you can, share the driving with someone else. Don't be tempted by alcohol. Even one drink will affect your concentration. And while you're at it, have your vehicle checked to make sure that everything is working properly before you go.

Don't be fooled...
When you find yourself nodding off at the wheel, pumping up the music and opening the windows may bring shortterm relief, but they are no substitute for proper rest.

The same goes for grim determination and cups of coffee. They may buy you a temporary respite, but the only solution for tiredness is to sleep.

If you're alone in the vehicle...
According to the Arrive Alive website (www.arrivealive.co.za), if you don't have a travelling companion to share the driving, and you're really tired, pull into a petrol station that looks busy and feels safe, lock your doors and have a short nap for 15 to 20 minutes. Never park on the side of the road to nap!
