These very pants that some black men now refuse us to wear came with pale skinned people in a boat. Before then, men and women in Africa used to wear skirts (think the Zulu's ibheshu, the Swati's hhiya over ijobo, the Xhosa's umbhaco and the Venda's tsindi).
It would seem that our black brothers not only borrowed the white man's pants, but also their primitive bad attitude they possessed in the 19th century.
Tired of wearing those awfully restrictive Victorian dresses, the white sisters had to fight for their rights to wear pants (well a close resemblance to them) so they could get on with something a tad more interesting than hosting tea parties.
Women in the 20th century flouted the man-made rule again when they donned trousers and overalls during World War I and replaced men in factories and in the fields.
Even in the in 90s the state of California in the USA had some dusty decree that did not allow women to wear pants to work – they subsequently changed that laughable law.
So the war that is waged against females who dare to wear a man's most precious clothing item is not a new one, although it's one that continues to this very day.
Most men would never dream of humiliating a woman by stripping off her pants and dignity in broad daylight, however many are comfortable with snickering snide comments, like how big your vagina looks in trousers. Many black cultures view women who wear pants as disrespectful, defiant and deviant.
Umlazi T section isn't the only community that has outlawed pants. Years ago a similar rule existed in a Newcastle's Madadeni township in section seven. Women who wore jeans were seen to be in the mood for sex and were often threatened with rape and were sexually harassed.
In the rural areas chiefs used their power to bar women from wearing this apparel. My mother used to prefer that we wear skirts whilst visiting gran because the "king" had warned that he would slash and burn those trousers.
Principals and governing bodies of some schools dilly dallied (and still do) on taking a decision to allow girl pupils to wear greys. In my school it was seen as unladylike and we were restricted to wearing pantyhose, which did very little to protect our pubescent legs from the chilly climes.
And in churches it is still a debate if Christian women who wear pants will see the doors of heaven. It's seems many of us will be keeping the devil company. I can only hazardous a guess as to why some men still want to control what women wear in the year 2008.
Could it be that they are resentful or jealous of the progress we have made in assuming what was traditionally their roles. Oh, well, who cares what their reasons are.
It's a free country where we can choose what to put over our bodies, miniskirt and pants included.

| ... because we have so much more to choose from when it comes to clothing. They cannot wear skirts - if they did, it would be un-masculine and people would laugh. Plus they look ridiculous. So instead of being happy that they can now see the shape of a good-looking woman's legs, they get all bitchy and act like children. | ||

| I had no idea men were still discriminating against women like this. Is it me or were the Zulu etc. men also wearing "skirts" before the white men introduced the pants (and werent the white men wearing robes before that)? So I say, if we cant wear pants and should wear skirts instead, so should they!!! | ||

| Girls could walk around topless nogal! I think our brothers are barbarians to an extent so extreme I am so embarrased of my own kind. Thinking about how young girls could walk around in omamndindi topless nogal and i promise you there were no problems. Society is rotten these days and there is a handful of perverts walking around who cant control themselves. | ||

| I agree with you completely... i am white and two or three years back the people in family's church when they went all "you will go to hell" because i had the audacity to wear pants to church (this is one of those conservative sister churches to the NG.) So i asked them what does matter what i wear? does it mean i am less in God's in eyes? doesn't it matter more that i actually came to church? they could answer me on any of those questions... | ||

| The other day I was thinking wouldn't it be safer for all our young girls to wear pants. Like the less guys see the better?? Esp girls of school going age, I hate seeing old men perving at them, but now you say they get treated horribly if they do so! Augh! It's clear gender descimination still exists! | ||

| When I was growing up our church made it very clear that girls should not wear pants or shorts. It was considered men's clothes. I think a man would look very funny in my slacks or jeans - they would never fit over the crotch area and the waist would be too tight and the hips too loose.Muslim women have to wear clothes which cover their ankles. What about Muslim men who wear the long white robe which looks like a dress (my husband mocks his Muslim friend telling him not to wear pyjamas...) Clothes do not make a man (or woman) - it is their character which is important and these idiots should get a life and look at their OWN characters! | ||

| As a father, husband & gentleman i feel better if my wife, daughter or sister went out on date or visiting put on her pant instead of skirt because in pants she feel more secure than in skirt especially this era of sick-men raping women everyhour. i don't say is a sin but won'r support minnies because i don't want my seven years son to see my wife's button-tips or back-thighs or g-strings because the wind blows on his direction - that i think it will make him mimic his sister looks the same or his mother or prompt him to peep his mom in the shower etc. | ||
