Question
If I applied for a VAT number, for my business, can I claim any VAT on expenses incurred before I receive my VAT number from SARS?
Answer
Not as far as I know because VAT is linked to specific periods and the invoices of those periods only. This is more a bookkeeping or accountant type of question and although I help clients with their books and tax (only income tax), I would prefer if you make sure of this. You can either contact SARS at 0860 12 12 18 (press the VAT option, there are three options) and ask them or ask an accountant who deal regularly with VAT.
