Handling office politics

Office politics can ruin your career so make sure you deal with it properly.

According to the dictionary, politics means "manoeuvring for power or advantage within a group or organisation". Manoeuvring for the next position in the work environment can get you promoted or win you clients – but it can also backfire.

People who thrive on office politics are usually very ambitious and practical. Those who dislike office politics usually just want to get their jobs done, and are content to move at the pace that management dictates.

However you feel, there'll inevitably come a day when you have to negotiate your way through a political office quagmire, so here's how to cope:

  • When you enter an organisation, ensure everyone knows you're a team player and you're ready to celebrate others' successes. Keep a safe distance from the gossip-mongers, but don't shun them: simply restrict your conversation to sport, your kids and the cost of petrol. Never discuss work issues.

  • In meetings, avoid challenging someone who has strong feelings and views about a subject that's of no real importance to you. Pick your battles carefully; concede on the small issues, and muster support on the big ones.

  • Honesty and open communication are the most effective ways to deal with office politics. Sometimes you may have to bite your tongue, but it pays off in the end.
