HR manager Latoya Mokotto and career coach Cindy Bell give 10 tips on how you can be a good leader who doesn’t abuse your power over others:

  • Leading is not about power. It is about serving the environment to work towards a common vision; therefore if you lead, do so by example.

  • Know and understand yourself. This will help you to manage yourself objectively.

  • Be open and honest. In your approach to your work and people, mean what you say and say what you mean. Deliver on your promises at all times. If you cannot deliver at a time that was agreed upon, keep people informed of your actions to rectify the situation.

  • Positively pull people and resources together. A good leader knows how to do this to achieve the objective.

  • Operate effectively and objectively. You can achieve this by knowing yourself to the point where you can effectively remove your "self" from difficult situations that may arise.

  • Understand your colleagues so you know what motivates them.

  • Align your leadership style to that of your organisation. This will facilitate powerful integration.

  • Get buy-in from the people you manage. This will fuel their enthusiasm to participate in projects you assign to them.

  • Know your strengths and weaknesses. This allows you to surround yourself with a complementary team.

  • Be respectful and professional at all times. Communicate in a manner that displays regard for others’ work and company processes.
