Northern Lights By Phillip Pullman
If you haven’t been seduced by the magical Pullman yet, this summer is as good a time as ever, especially with the film The Golden Compass hitting the screens. (The Golden Compass is the American name for Northern Lights . Remember how they renamed Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone? It's one of those. Annoying, isn't it?)
Northern Lights is the first of the multi-award-winning His Dark Materials trilogy and, while it's usually only found in the bookstore's children's section, it's a meaty philosophical read broaching many themes from childhood friendship all the way to the death of religion. We follow the quest of feisty young heroine Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon (everyone in Lyra's world has a daemon, a cross between an extension of one's soul and a guardian angel), as they journey from Jordan College in Oxford into danger, intrigue and one of the richest psychological landscapes fantasy has to offer.
If you have ever enjoyed fantasy, you'll love Phillip Pullman.
