Save energy - save money

Electricity price too extreme on your budget? This winter, consider using alternative heating methods that not only promote ‘greener’ living, but save you thousands too.

Because heating our homes is becoming increasingly expensive, many people are looking for alternative heating methods. The conventional methods are electric, oil, natural gas, or propane, but these options have some negative repercussions, including high prices, a limited availability of resources, and they make use of non-renewable energy sources.

As fossil fuels, oil and gas are not renewable fuels and their use is not sustainable because they will run out sometime in the future.

Install and insert
Whilst wood-burning fire places aren't very energy efficient they are renewable resources and you can get more out of an existing fireplace by installing an insert. Inserts can burn wood, gas, or wood pellets, and they have an insulated glass door that prevents hot air from escaping up the chimney - offering the most inefficient way to heat your home.

Use fire
If you are planning to renovate your kitchen, or are in the process of building a new home, adding a fireplace to the kitchen is one way to heat up the cooking area. Include a grate to hold a pan over the flames or to hang a kettle. For cooking convenience, install the fireplace at waist height and include a ledge for hot dishes.

For open-plan living, a free-standing fireplace allows you to heat a large open space. This is a great option for a master suite with one side open to the bedroom, and the other to the bath, or a family room with one side open to the kitchen.

A Morso fireplace is an advanced system for burning wood and – if used properly - is among the most environmentally friendly heating solutions in the world. When a wood-burning fireplace is used, an environmentally correct energy source is being used, because wood is a non-fossil natural product.

Burning wood is CO2-neutral, in the sense that the CO2 released by combustion was bound to the tree throughout its lifetime. Wood is moreover one of the few energy sources that are renewable, as opposed to oil and gas. We can always plant new trees to replace the ones we have cut down.

Radiant heat
One of the oldest forms of heating, radiant heat (or underfloor heating) provides comfort and warmth underfoot using an efficient system that uses far less energy than other methods of heating. Radiant energy is totally pure radiation and is absorbed by an object without physical contact with the heat source or by heating the surrounding air, as is the case with convective, forced air systems.

Because radiant heating systems work more efficiently, you end up using less energy, while maintaining a more comfortable living space.

Underfloor heating using radiant heat is the most economical way of heating your home and water-based underfloor heating is widely used as an alternative to electrical underfloor heating throughout the world, primarily because it can use a combination of different heat sources to warm up your home. From environmentally friendly solar power, to electricity and gas.

Use it - don't lose it!
You might not think those small gaps around your doors and windows are a big deal but, even small cracks allow heat to escape. Draught-proofing your home can save up to 15 percent in heating and cooling costs and reduces demand on heating and cooling systems.

The future
Geothermal energy is not a new source of alternative energy, as it has been researched for quite some time. This type of heating and cooling uses a geothermal pump to extract heat from within the earth to heat a home.

I giggled a bit about the suggestion to build a fireplace in the kitchen to heat up the cooking area. What about installing a proper woodburning stove to cook the food, warm the kitchen and heat up your connected geyser at the same time? Much more efficient.

Heard how the rainforests and other wood sources are being depleted worldwide???? Not to mention the contribution to the ozone layer!!

i am not lazy i just believe in saving energy

Underfloor heating does not use radiant heat, but convective and conductive heat. I think is the most inefficient way of heating a house, because almost the same amount of heat goes to heating the soil below as the amount that heats the floor of the house. It is also the least controllable with respect to heating specific areas of the home. True radiant heat is obtained from the old electric heaters that we grew up with. It immediately heats the person in front of the heater and the room that the person is in.

Really bad bad article. At all costs, we must stop burning wood.

Burning wood in your home is much more energy inefficient than using power generated by Eskom. Therefore the greenhouse gasses that you contribute are much more than just using a heater. I also don't get the people lighting fires for earth hour, its uses much more energy than a lightbulb and the C, CO and CO2 emitted is much much worse.

What a silly little inconsequential article Janice. No time to do some research? My 9 year old daughter could have done a better job. As for the underfloor heating - radiant or not - speak to those who installed it and never use it - it consumes electricity at a formidable rate! And geothermal energy - is that REALLY a factor in the average Joburg or Cape Town city dweller's life?

This is the worst article I've ever seen...

Save the planet by burning wood?

HAHAHA!!

I read this article and I was a bit surprised. Really now, we should all know by now there is a balance between what may be environmentally friendly because it is natural and the process to use that particular item. The forests really do not need to be cut down for us to burn friendly fuel. What happened to building correctly in the first place. What happened to using insulation in the ceiling and making sure windows are orientated in the correct direction. There needs to be a balance in choosing a product. It may be totally natural, but is the process natural, is it far to transport? Like light bulbs, energy saving light bulbs may sound great but what happens when it needs to be disposed of? How is that bulb actually made? We need to be sensible about our choices. Burning wood is not a sensible choice. We need to prevent the need for heating in the first place. This article requires more research. Under floor heating? Have you seen what it costs to use under floor heating (and this before the electricity increases)? I am surprised that this is toted as "green"!

Guys, you're not seeing the bigger picture. You either heat a home or you don't. Obviously if you want to be 100% eco-friendly you won't, but there are very little options out there for us at the moment. In other countries geo-thermal heating is being looked at - here ... nada. Underfloor heating is an energy saving method due to the fact that first: heat rises, second: heat is radiated into the surroundings and third: if a home is weatherproofed and sealed against draughts - it stays warmer for longer. PLUS if you install a water heated system you save substantially on energy costs.
