A healthy detox plan
Even one detox day a week can make a difference. Here's how...
Weekend indulgences such as high-fat snacks, take-away meals, toxins in processed foods and alcohol puts stress on the liver, dietician Jeske Wellmann recommends that you make Monday your own “detox day” where you focus on healthy foods and enough water to support your liver. This will leave you feeling rejuvenated and energised – rather than hungry and tired. It may also motivate you to stick to healthy eating for the rest of the week. (Or you can follow it for a week to lose weight).
Give this easy plan a try:
Breakfast
125ml (½ cup) high-fibre cereal
Low-fat or fat-free milk
Fresh fruit
Mid-morning snack
Small low-fat or fat-free yoghurt
Fresh fruit
Lunch
Big salad with added avocado, nuts or olives for good fats and tuna in salted water or small pieces of chicken for protein
Mid-afternoon snack
Small low-fat or fat-free yoghurt
Fresh fruit
Dinner
Low GI starch like sweet potatoes, beans or pasta
One portion of lean protein like chicken breast or fish
Some vegetables but don’t over cook them, rather cook in a little water or steam to retain the crunch
Aim to eat nine portions of fruit and veggies combined per day. A portion is about the size of your fist. (Amounts stipulated are for the average woman. Men can eat more of the same).
