Let’s face it, when it comes to our bodies, most women are complicated. When you look in the mirror, what do you notice the most? If I were to ask you to take a look at yourself in a full-length mirror and name things you LIKE about your body (hands, feet and face don’t count), would you be able to name three things?
If I were to ask you to mention three things you don’t like, I bet that would be no problem. Why is that? Why do we have such a tough time loving the bodies we have?
I think it’s because we focus all our attention on the parts we don’t like. When we look in the mirror, we don’t just see what we look like; we see all the emotion we carry that makes us feel the way we do about our bodies. We bring our past experiences, our past hurts, love and joy.
There are those who believe that body image is simply exterior and therefore not important. I disagree. In my experience, our bodies are very important. More than that, the way we feel about our bodies is of utmost importance as it does affect the way we feel on the inside and the way we function in the world.
Think about it, if you have had a negative body experience or have been repeatedly told something negative about your body, how does that make you feel as a woman? How does it impact on your relationships? How does it impact on the way you choose to dress yourself?
The way we feel about our bodies affects so many aspects of our lives. That’s why, when we look in the mirror, we are looking at far more than just our reflections.
In my experience, when women start to see themselves differently and start to dress in a way that makes the most of the body they have, it can make a powerful impact on their lives. Of course, the woman has to be open to the change and open to the fact that the way she has seen her body in the past is not necessarily the way other people see her or necessarily the correct reflection.
I’m not saying that we must only focus on our exterior, but I am saying that our external choices do reflect who we are on the inside. I encourage women to create a look that is authentic and speaks of who they are rather than just using it as a mask.
Does this mean that a well-groomed woman always feels great about herself? No. Sometimes the ‘perfect’ exterior is a front to an inner world that feels far from perfect and together.
It’s about bringing the two together. A great exterior won’t change the whole chaotic inner world of a woman, but it can contribute to helping her feel better while she works at the inner turmoil. Fake it till you make it, but don’t let it stay that way to the point where you don’t know what’s real and what’s not.
It’s about a balance. Learn how to dress for your body shape so that you can make the most of what you have. Be aware that only you can change the way you feel about your body by making that conscious decision. Decide to have fun in the process of finding that gorgeous, fabulous you, inside and out.
