What is joy to you?
Is it running around in the cool rain on a hot, summer's day? Is it enjoying a glass of wine outside on the patio after a long, stressful day at work? Or is it simply laughing and spending time together with the ones you love?
For me, joy is seeing animals happy.
I've always had a thing about animals.
This year, I took the plunge to finally visit an animal shelter.
I was joined with two friends and we set off to walk a few dogs. All-in-all we ended up walking nine dogs between the three of us.
Where does the body and soul joy fit into this equation?
Let me tell you:
• Body Joy: You'll feel muscles the next day that you didn't even know existed. Don't get comfortable with the fact that you'll be taking a leisurely stroll with these dogs. They've been cooped up. They want to run. And run they will....with you lagging behind!
• Soul Joy: You can't believe how grateful these animals are when you're with them, simply giving them some love and attention, or taking them for a walk (or run!). To see them smiling (yes, they do) or the look in their eyes, to feel them licking your face to say thank you – these are the things that make you realize that you're doing something worthwhile. You're making a difference – even if it's a small one.
I'm not going to lie, it's a bit of a pull at the heart strings to know that I can't adopt any of the dogs – our yard is minute, or any cats – we've got two queens at home, but it's worth it if only to see the joy in their eyes.
To feel the joy in your soul and to feel the joy of walking or running is awesome.
If you haven't been to an animal shelter to walk a few dogs, or pat a few cats – I highly recommend it!
This is real joy for the body and soul!
And it's a lot of fun to do on your own, with your partner or as an outing for the whole family!
