Double standards much?

What is wrong with us, asks Lili Radloff? And when will we STOP the hate?

I was pretty surprised to see that the most read story on News24, for the past 3 days nogal, is about Kate Middleton apologising to William for the embarrassment caused by the naked pics taken of her. I sincerely hope my fellow readers clicked on the story purely to find out WHY?  Why, I ask you with tears in my bloodshot eyes, is she supposed to apologise to him?

An apology would have been appropriate if she snuck out of the palace one night, got snotters, and then flashed her boobs at passers-by.  I think it’s fair to say the chances of that happening aren’t exactly huge. Instead she was spied on from a huge distance and William was sitting RIGHT NEXT TO HER, rubbing sun-cream on her back for heaven’s sake!

If I were Kate I’d want HIM to apologise for dragging me into this royal mess. I guess that’s why I’ll never be a duchess. Damn.

Anyhoo, this got me thinking about the certain low-grade, insidious sexism that’s so ingrained in our society that even we, the victims, believe it and support it.

We ran an excellent column this week, that bemoaned the fact that South African women still earn significantly less than their male counterparts and proposed reasons for this underrepresentation. I urge you to read it. Of course, one of the first comments it got as a response was that women get paid less because of the choices we make.

So it’s OUR fault see! Silly, silly us.

Another story that made headlines recently was that whole Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart debacle in which Kristen Stewart hilariously got called a “trampire” by the angry public.

It became less funny though, when we noticed that while Kristen Stewart was being slut-shamed left, right and centre (seriously, some of those Twi-hards are vicious) her partner in crime, Rupert Sanders, was painted as the poor man who got caught in her evil spell.

Why are women always the villains and men the victims? Why do women get angry at the “trashy skank” who slept with their husband and not at the trashy skank of a husband?

It wasn’t that girl from accounting who stood in front of friends, family and God and promised to be true to you. It wasn’t that girl from accounting who knocked you up and is abandoning your children. Lay the blame where it is deserved, okay?

In the mean time, while Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga and Jessica Simpson are being torn apart by the media for gaining weight (she just had a baby, for crying in a bucket!), I can’t remember when the last time was that I heard a male star being criticised for his weight. John Candy perhaps?

There are thousands more examples, but I think you get my drift. I don’t know about you, but I want to stop having double standards for men and women. I want to banish it from my mind, nip it in the bud, eradicate it from my world. Don’t you?

P.S While we’re talking about double standards and angry comments – a user submitted an article about women who cheat, and the men went ballistic! I guess it can hurt when the shoe is on the other foot..

Do you have more stories about this kind of thing that we should know about? Do tell us.

Love and no more judgies.
