HERE'S WHAT BREAST MILK CONTAINS:
Fatty acids
These convert energy and contribute to the growth of the nervous system. Don't take baby off the breast until he has had the high concentration of fat at the end of the feed. This will leave him more satisfied. Fat content is also much higher in the afternoon feed.
Protein
The protein in breast milk boosts the immune system and contribute to brain growth.
Vitamins
Breast milk provides all the vitamins for your baby.
Ascorbic acid
This antioxidant helps rid the body of free radicals which can damage cells.
Iron
Human breast milk is quite low in iron, but there is a high absorption rate (50%).
Lactose
This contains the sugar and main milk carbohydrate. Human milk has the highest lactose content of all mammals' milk, probably because we have larger brains.
Amylase
This enzyme helps in the digestion of carbohydrates.
Lipase
Another enzyme that breaks down fat and helps to kill bacteria.
Minerals
Human breast milk has a fairly low concentration of minerals so as not to overload the newborn baby's immature kidneys. Minerals regulate normal body functions.
Water
This constitutes 87.5% of human milk so your baby will never become dehydrated.
