In fact, most authorities agree that, whether breast – or formula-fed, the young baby should get enough liquid from feeding. "But after that, you definitely do need to start giving extra fluid – and water is by far the best option," says Penny. "Babies and toddlers need around 2 to 2 and 1/2 litres of fluid a day (less in winter, more in summer), over and above the fluid that is extracted from their food."
Some of it will come from other drinks like milk, she adds. But mothers should aim to get their little ones used to drinking water, as it is the most beneficial and problem-free liquid. It will not fill them up with additives, overdose them with refined sugar, or rot their teeth even before they erupt from their gums, as many other drinks can do. And other drinks may not do such a good job of quenching thirst, too. "In addition, it's a good idea to get your child into the habit of drinking plain water at a young age, as this will develop into a habit which will serve her well as an adult," Penny says.
Some mothers worry that water might put their children off their meals by filling up their tummies, but Penny says this should not be a problem as long as water is given after and between meals instead of just before them. "A drink of water will distend the child's stomach, but it is quickly dispelled, so don't worry that it will stop your child from eating."
Babies need extra fluid when they start eating solids, especially if you are feeding lots of healthy wholegrain foods. "If the child is not getting enough liquid, she could become constipated," explains Penny. Little ones could also need more water in summer, especially when it's very hot or they've been very active. And of course, water is vital for rehydration when children lose fluid rapidly due to diarrhoea or vomiting. Young babies dehydrate very quickly, so do be aware of the signs of dehydration: listlessness, fatigue, dry skin, generally seeming weak and fretful. And passing urine which is darker in colour than usual.
Water helps the body in many ways
What about mineral water? There have been many scare reports about mineral water carrying contaminants or unhealthy levels of additives. So stick with boiled cooled water if you're concerned. We are fortunate in this country to have some of the best quality tap water in the world.
Tip: Boil all baby's drinking water until she is at least 6 months old. Simply boil the water in the kettle (water is sterilised as soon as it reaches a rolling boil) and allow to cool at room temperature in the bottle or cup.
