Melissa McCarthy: A target of weight hate

A nasty review about the comedian’s new film has labelled her as “tractor-sized” and a “hippo.” Is it fair?

While we are all entitled to our own opinion, Rex Reed, a long time New York Observer film critic attacked Melissa in what seems to be a suspiciously cruel movie review on Identity thief.

Rex deliberately focuses on the actress’s weight calling her a “female hippo”, ”Tractor-sixed” and “humongous” before finally proclaiming her movie “trashy” and a “chunk of junk.”

And, if you weren’t convinced about the personal nature of his review yet, Rex wrote that Melisa is “a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success.”

Wow, talk about harsh.
