Defeat the drought
February 2007
If you're worried about your garden's lack of hydration, follow these wise water-saving tips.
Soak the soil sporadically rather than daily. This encourages stronger roots to grow.
Lay mulch on the soil when it is moist. It slows evaporation and hinders weeds.
For a plant that needs a lot of water, sink a plastic bottle with holes in the bottom into the ground next to it. Fill this when you water and it will slowly soak the soil, without waste.
Collect rainwater to fill your watering can. Use buckets, or connect your guttering to a water tank.
