Defeat the drought
February 2007

If you're worried about your garden's lack of hydration, follow these wise water-saving tips.

  • Soak the soil sporadically rather than daily. This encourages stronger roots to grow.
  • Lay mulch on the soil when it is moist. It slows evaporation and hinders weeds.
  • For a plant that needs a lot of water, sink a plastic bottle with holes in the bottom into the ground next to it. Fill this when you water and it will slowly soak the soil, without waste.
  • Collect rainwater to fill your watering can. Use buckets, or connect your guttering to a water tank.
