I think it’s finally safe to say that spring has arrived – even here in Cape Town.
And while our spring doesn’t have a patch on the glorious burst of colour and the rich smells and warm rains of my native Gauteng, it is immensely cheering to see that ball of fire in the sky again, and to get rid of the top 3 layers of clothing (at least 2 layers still remain).
But spring doesn’t only bring carefree happiness does it? Already I’m hearing panicked murmurings about bikini season and vague complaints about spring cleaning.
What are we doing to ourselves here, ladies? I’m really beginning to think we are the makers of our own misery.
Look, I think it’s great if we feel like a nice sprucing up of our homes, our souls and our bodies. It works with the season in a symbolic way, and it’s always a good idea to re-evaluate your life.
But let’s make a pact not to punish ourselves. Let’s make it the year of “Let’s not and say we did.”
Let’s not repack every single cupboard in our houses.
Let’s not go on punishing diets and stupid detoxes.
Let’s not fret about fitting into a bikini and just buy a one-piece instead.
Let’s not take up a silly, costly hobby we actually suck at and rather decide that reading counts as a hobby.
Let’s not fry our skins in the sun or spend R100s on self-tan because magazines say we must.
Let’s not join a gym, go 3 times and end up paying the fees for the rest of the year.
Let’s make our lives easier, simpler. Let’s be kind to our bodies and our hearts. Let’s pat ourselves on the back and give ourselves a break.
Because heaven knows, our lives are hard enough already.
