We met in 2006 in Maputo Mozambique, at a wedding after-party. Afzal’s friend, Nick (the crazy Italian), came over dragged me across the room to introduce me to his friend Afzal. Image credit: Mayur Studio

Afzal and I started chatting and soon realized that he actually knew the small NGO I was working for at that time, as his company was a supplier. Image credit: Mayur Studio

At the end of the evening when I was leaving, he asked for my phone number. I was hesitating – and out of the blue, his highly intoxicated brother comes over and says “you two should just get married”.Image credit: Mayur Studio

Afzal wanted to dig a hole and hide. I then decided to give him my temporary Mozambican number, knowing full well I was going back to SA a day later. Image credit: Mayur Studio

He tried to get me out for coffee the next day, but I flatly refused. I returned to SA and to my job. Two days later, he sends me flowers, with his number. I called him. That was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.Image credit: Mayur Studio

Even though we lived in different countries, him in Moz, and me in SA, we always made time for a coffee whenever we travelled to each other’s countries.Image credit: Mayur Studio

The friendship grew irrespective of all the happiness and heartbreak in our lives, and in December 2009, he kissed me across the table when we were having dinner in Pretoria.Image credit: Mayur Studio

The next day I went for his birthday dinner, and after the ‘birthday kiss’, the rest is history.

He formally asked me out at midnight on the 31st of December 2009, while he was in Durban and I was across the Indian Ocean in Goa, India.Image credit: Mayur Studio

Of course I said yes.Image credit: Mayur Studio

We then proceeded to have a long-distance relationship for 1.5 years – him in Maputo and I in Johannesburg. It was tough, but so worth him in the long run.Image credit: Mayur Studio

Late February 2011, at Sunset on the Umlangha Beach in Durban (where I was on work assignment at the time), he asked me grow old with him and be his wife.Image credit: Mayur Studio

Again, it was a definite yes.Image credit: Mayur Studio
