We met at varsity. I studied Architecture and Rob studied landscape Architecture. We both shared a design studio.

How he proposed:
The two of us went away for a last bit of holiday on New Year's Eve. We stayed by my parent's holiday home in Ballito. He arranged a romantic dinner at a nice restaurant, and we had a great time, even though it was raining.

I was starting to get a cold, and went for a nap so I could be wide awake at midnight. Meanwhile, Rob was stressing about the weather and the proposal. I was blissfully unaware.

At 23:40, Rob woke me up. The weather had cleared perfectly for us and he took me down to the beach. We looked for a good spot to look at the fireworks, and sat down on the rocks.

At midnight he pulled out a ring and got down on one knee. I said yes immediately!

I knew that the photos were most important to us, so we chose a great photographer (Black Frame Photography) and started looking at types of photographs we liked.

That gave us a rough idea of the kind of venue we were looking for. We compared costs and visited quite a few venues, but fell in love with The Cradle.

Being designers, we wanted to keep things simple and elegant. We decided on a simple "theme" of black, grey/silver and white with a green accent colour. We did the invitations, menus, name tags and all printed items ourselves.

We approached The Petal Box to help us with our flower arrangements and general planning and we were very impressed with the wonderful service and advice that we received from Sandra at The Petal Box. She really thought of every detail and had great ideas. The flowers and table arrangements were amazing!

We used all white flowers: a combination of roses and lizianthus and St joseph lillies all in square vases with Gladiolas in tall rectangular vases on the ends and middle of the tables. The main table had a number of tall candles with shorter vases of lillies , roses and lizianthus.

There were many candles to give a lovely warm atmosphere. We used the reverse of a black and silver table runner which was the perfect metallic colour that we wanted - nobody even noticed it was the wrong way up.

We had two cakes: a chocolate mousse cake with chocolate surround made by a friend, and a cake made of different kinds of cheeses which was decorated by Rob's mother and a family friend.
Our favors were white umbrellas with an R & L logo on them. The umbrellas were kindly supplied by a friend.

We were strict on the budget and got help from friends and family but we didn't compromise and somehow we came in under our budget!
