I have been one of those very rare and lucky ones who met my soul mate very early in life. Both of us were 19 at the time. We moved in together just before we turned 21, which some said, was a recipe for disaster.

A group of us decided to go to Thailand for the December holidays to let our hair down. Ryan proposed the night before we were due to head home. I knew that ring would be a permanent part of me from that day.

Life carried on – we moved from Durban to Cape Town, set up home, changed jobs, got a second cat and moved houses again. And yet, we were still not married!

To us, the word ‘wedding’ seemed to bring with it a lot of hard work, a lot of difficult questions as to where we would have it with our families scattered across the country and a whole lot of added expensive decisions to make. "Honeymoon’ – now that was a word that seemed to have a lot more positive connotations. So we thought: why not skip the wedding and just have the honeymoon?

And that was how we came to have our wedding AND honeymoon in exquisite Zanzibar!

Everything was meticulously planned by the wedding co-ordinator at the 5 star resort and the travel agent at Flight Centre. I simply had to bring my dress along (that was easy enough – CT has loads of wonderful dress makers) and I could choose the following from pre-selected options: Style of Cake, Theme for Flowers ,Entertainment at the wedding (Masai warriors, local Tarob band), Photographer, Meal & Champagne choices

Ryan and I simply hopped onto a plane on a Tuesday morning, flew to the tropical island and enjoyed being waited on hand and foot right up until the Saturday (25 September 2010) when the ceremony would take place.

The Masai warriors, local tourists, and staff from the hotel were at my wedding – and it was simply beautiful. It took place on the beach amidst melodic singing and flower petals being thrown at my feet by Masai maiden as I walked down the “aisle”.

We continued to celebrate by taking photos across the island for the rest of the afternoon, toasting champagne with the local’s and having a sumptuous dining experience that night. We were upgraded to a luxurious honeymoon suite for the duration of the stay.
