As they brought the dish that was enclosed, the two waitrons opened ours at the same time and there it was… a little red box. Kevin came over to me went on his knees and said how much he loves me and asked if I’ll be his wife!
My reaction was not what he expected – I laughed and said maybe. But that was my nerves and I laughed because it was so weird for him to be that romantic. (I actually just expected him to say one day while we watching TV, let’s get married)
Wedding date:
We were meant to get married the 21/22 December 2012. But in September 2011 we thought why wait and got married 3months later 23 December 2011.

A little behind the scenes information about the wedding planning process (this includes deciding on theme, venues, etc):
Well we only had 3 months to plan the wedding. The reason we didn’t wait was because Kevin’s brother was going to be in South Africa that time (he lives in New Zealand). Not only that, but my siblings were also going to be in SA that December so we thought… why not?
If our loved ones are here let’s have a ‘small’ wedding.
We were lucky to have the support of our family. They practically put the whole wedding together for us. We live in Johannesburg and our wedding was in Cape Town (home town) because all of our family members live there.
In September, after deciding to get married that December, I was in CPT for work and sorted out the venue, make-up, photographer and hair stylist.

Luckily my parents, aunt and brother convinced us to keep the wedding small and chose a quaint venue for the reception. The reception was at Vintage India Restaurant in Gardens Centre Cape Town. It was the most appropriate and cost-effective place at the time and they had a variety of delicious foods. They were also quite accommodating with our requests.

My family is Hindu (Indian) and Kevin’s family is Christian so we had a few differences meaning quite a few of my family were vegetarian. However, we decided that Indian food is the safest when it comes to vegetarian and that it would be a great way for his guests to experience a bit of the Indian flavour.

We had a temple ceremony…
At first we wanted to do both – Kevin is Christian and I’m Tamil. However, to try and fit both ceremonies and the reception in one day was proving to be complicated. Kevin then allowed me to just to do the Hindu ceremony, which I’m really grateful for…

However, I didn’t feel complete about him not practicing his faith and including what he knows in our ceremony which is the start of our life together. My Guru Krishna told me that we can have a joint ceremony with Kevin’s priest.

That was the best news ever.
We then asked Kevin’s priest if he’d be open to the idea of performing a prayer, bless the rings and say the vows in our temple. That made everything so much more special and different… Once the Guru finished with the Hindu rituals the priest took over and blessed the ceremony.

We tried keeping it Eastern with a bit of Western flavour. The ceremony was Indian with a priest there showing our openness to culture and religion and the western side of things. We dressed western for the reception even though the restaurant was Indian cuisine and Indian themed.

The music and vibe brought in the western feel. Our invites were not the usual big Indian invites – it was homemade. Our friend designed them and we put all elements together.
Planning – most things were homemade, centre pieces, décor and thank you gifts. Most of the planning was via email and BBM (communicating with my family in CPT regarding décor and India regarding wedding attire)
Our traditional clothing was bought in Mumbai India and was only brought in two days before the wedding. Luckily everything fitted to the ‘T’.
