Set your Spring Table

The arrival of Spring means more Al Fresco lunches in the garden. Set your table with beautiful flowers of the season.

Beautiful, sunny days should be spent outside. Preferably while picnicking with friends, or playing a game of catch with the younger members of your family on your beautiful, green lawn. Here’s how to get your picture perfect lawn:

Don’t cut your lawn too short or too often
Cutting your grass too short makes it difficult for your grass to get enough sunlight to be healthy. Repetitive cutting also damages your lawn and gives it even less of a chance to grow. Adjust your lawnmower blade so that it cuts the grass at longer heights. Also, make sure that your blades are sharp. Dull blades tear grass instead of cutting it. This means that your grass will take extra time to repair itself instead of growing thick and green.

Water your lawn well, but at irregular times
Water your lawn with at least 3 – 4cm of water at a time, but at irregular intervals. This will cause the top section of the soil to dry out, which means the grass roots will dig down deepl to reach the water that has been stored there. Watering your lawn frequently means that the roots will not bother to search for water below because there will always be water near the top. Also, grass that is watered too often will create clumps and runners that block soil from being able to access sunlight and water. This weakens your grass.

Post-mowing care
After mowing, leave grass clippings on the lawn. They will break down and compost, which adds nutrients to the soil. Poking holes in your lawn using spiked shoes, a lawn aerator, or even a screwdriver, allow moisture and air to get down into the soil and loosen it up. Fertilise your lawn in late spring and autumn before harsher weather hits to help your lawn against the harsher weather.
