Blooming marvellous windowsills

Turn your windowsill into a potted garden; get to know pelargoniums, see what's new on the market and diarise your garden tasks.

Rules for windowsill gardens
  • Bathroom and kitchen windowsills often look like store shelves or a dumping site for empty bottles and the past few years' unwanted gifts – particularly unattractive from outside! Clear the clutter, and then restyle your windowsill.
  • Choose a style for your windowsill: either Victoria, Mexican, French, oriental or any that suits your home décor theme. Or mix styles – but if you stick to a single container colour, such as red.
  • Use plants that enjoy similar growing conditions. Sun lovers will work well on windowsills that face north, east, or west, while south-facing windowsills are ideal for shade-loving plants.
