So Ralph Lauren have stepped away from the skinny model norm. Well, sort of...
This Australian beauty has become Ralph Lauren's first "plus size" model. But, if this is considered “big”, then you’ve got me heeltemal perplexed.
Yes, 23-year-old Robyn Lawley is enviably tall and yes, she boasts a not-so-skeletal frame compared to what we’re used to seeing on the runway and in glossy magazines.
But, measuring in at around size 12 hardly puts this stunner (who, in an interview on US breakfast TV show Good Morning America, called herself ‘big boned’) into the curvy category. Right?
Either I’m being silly, or the fashion industry’s plus size ‘ideal’ has suddenly gotten smaller.
While I do see this move as a notable progression for Ralph Lauren (who are notorious for Photoshopping their models to all kinds of bony), I do not associate Robyn with anything big, large, bulky, curvy, voluptuous or the like.
• Donna Claire wouldn’t think she’s plus size.
• Captive8 won’t be able to help her,
• Old Navy will send her to their ‘normal’ wear, and so too would
• Kiyonna, who also stocks sizes starting 16 and above.
Sigh. Let’s hope more fashion houses follow this example, but preferably without all the fuss – it shouldn’t be news that normal sized women can actually model.
