I am sure you all noticed the first two trends, but probably not the last. And it makes for interesting conversations. I don’t know about you, but I think many of Hollywood’s leading men have had beards for years…
But before we get into that, let’s discuss colour, or the lack thereof.
Several of the key leading ladies, including Jennifer Lawrence,
CharlizeTheron, Amy Adams, Amanda Seyfried, Anne Hathaway and Zoe
Salanda all turned up in shades of pale.
And as much as the idea
is to contrast with the red of the carpet and therefore have a ‘moment’
- with everyone doing it, it fell a bit flat. Also white is tricky. It
is too bridal on most and it doesn’t suit everyone’s colouring.
So there were as many misses as hits. Charlize and J-Law got it right. Anne did not.
And if they weren’t wearing white, the ladies were wearing black. Nicole Kidman looked great. Sandra Bullock and Halle Berry did too. So black with a bit of lace or beading worked well for the ladies over forty.
But it was Adele who was queen of the night, wearing two bedazzled black dresses, and showed it can work for the younger set too.
Red and blue are always in evidence at a red carpet. I was disappointed by the lack of navy, which is always an elegant red carpet colour.
Only Kerry Washington really carried colour off on the night. I was also surprised that the colour of the year, emerald, was noticeable absent from the red carpet entirely.
And just as if you weren’t wearing white, you were wearing black, if you weren’t wearing a strapless gown; you were probably not nominated for an Oscar.
The strapless silhouette was ubiquitous with a prevalence that I have never seen before. Almost every single woman on show was in strapless.
And considering how much I can’t stand it, you must know that this was not a stellar year for me at the Oscars red carpet.
So I turned to the chaps to see what they were up to. And discovered that all the leading men that I fancy had a beard on for the night. Even George Clooney. Ben Affleck has one of course.
As does Justin Theroux, Bradley Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugh Jackman, Paul Rudd and Live Schreiber. That’s a lot of beard.
And so manly, which is the opposite of the beards that have usually accompanied gentlemen on a red carpet in the past, right? Get it? Luckily I like a beard and was significantly cheered by seeing them all.
And with that, awards season is over, and we await next year’s, hoping colours will be brighter and necklines a bit more interesting. Fingers crossed!
