Get Sterilised!

Suffering in the recession? Then get yourself sterilised – it's quick, easy and relatively painless...

What does sterilisation mean to you as an individual?

Association for Voluntary Sterilisation of South Africa (AVSSA) will be emphasising the benefits of smaller families to both the men and women of the Western Cape.

The current economic recession affects everyone, especially those that are trying to raise a family. The cost of living is on the rise, the increase in petrol prices directly affects the cost of food, clothing, services and transport. The unemployment rate is growing due to the closure of companies that cannot survive the increasing cost pressures. Unfortunately families cannot close down or liquidate; somehow they have to survive these rising costs. "It is infinitely easier to feed and clothe a small family and provide adequate housing, health care and education. Economic growth without reduction in rapid population growth is also unlikely," says Dr Margaret Moss, Chairperson of the Association for Voluntary Sterilisation of South Africa.

Sterilisation is one of the many contraceptive options available to individuals that helps empower them to choose the number of children they wish to have. Sterilisation is the ideal choice for men and women that have decided that their family is complete and they are certain that they do not want any more children.

Male and female sterilisation is a surgical procedure that must be considered irreversible and permanent. The procedure is small, safe and simple without any long-term effects on a person’s health or sexual performance. All patients should be counselled pre&ndashperation to ensure full understanding of the procedure and the significance of their choice.

Female sterilisation (having your tubes tied) is usually done laparoscopically (keyhole surgery) under general anaesthetic. The patient is advised to have a few days rest before resuming normal daily activities. During the operation, the surgeon blocks the fallopian tubes so the eggs are no longer carried from the ovaries to the uterus, thus preventing conception. Female sterilisation, after recovery, is effective immediately. Hormone production will continue as normal and therefore the procedure does not affect any other female characteristics.

Male sterilisation, vasectomy, is the more simple and effective surgical procedure. This procedure has increased in popularity over the years due to the following factors: No-scalpel vasectomy is done under local anaesthetic is performed in about 15minutes and the patient can resume work the following day. During the operation, the surgeon closes the tubes which carry sperm from the testes to mix with the seminal fluid. Sperm free seminal fluid cannot cause a pregnancy. It is important to continue to use a method of contraception until you have received results from your 3month test confirming that the operation was successful. The testicles continue to produce male hormones and therefore the procedure does not affect any other masculine characteristics.

NB Sterilisation does not cure or prevent HIV/Aids or other sexually transmitted diseases. If the individual is not in a mutually monogamous relationship, condoms should still be used for every sexual act.

Female and male sterilisation is performed free at certain state hospitals and community health centres. Enquiries can be made at any family planning clinic or Community Health Centre. Further information, brochures or other educational material on sterilisation please contact AVSSA. Tel: 021 – 531 1665

I was sterilised 5 years ago and regretted it ever since. NOT because I cant have kids but because my entire body has suffered since with very bad very long menstruation cycles - clotting. I am now dangerously anaemic. Before the operation, I was the picture of health, now I am not. I wish I never had it done, I would rather have taken a pill for the rest of my life than deal with the aftermath of this decision, Oh and it HURT LIKE HELL and I was bruised for weeks!

I believe that when you are poor and cannot afford more that 2 kids, there should be a law that you have to get sterilised to prevent children being born unwanted and ending up as orphans...
    CTMOM 7/3/2009 9:34:45 AM
@Smiegul - so you want to take away a woman's God given right to have children? What if her economic situation changes and she is able to support them and YOU forced her into a sterilisation that cant be reversed (many cant be) People need to take responsibility when it comes to sex to stop unwanted pregnancies, HIV, AIDS etc. I am actually appalled by your comment!

My husband and myself are all for sterilisation, and in the enxt month or two he or myself will be going. I've got 1 daughter and know the costs involved in having children. and CTMOM if someones economic situation does change they can addopt one of the millions of children who don't have homes.

it was the best decision i had ever made - no regrets

I've got the mirena now, when it's time to take it out, we'll decide whether or not we want more children or to have another one put in. Sterilisation scares me because it's irreversable - the mirena lasts five years, can be taken out whenever you want, and have relatively little side-effects.
    Justine 7/3/2009 10:52:52 AM
First of CTMOM, I dont believe its your right to have children, the world is in the mess its in because people just mindlessly produce children that they can sometimes not afford to raise, or worse do not have the TIME or ENERGY to raise. I had the Mirena, it caused severe acne, headaches and weight gain, am now investigating female sterilisation.

I absolutely agree. And furthermore, the world is full enough of people and consumers using up all her resources. People need to think about the future of what the world will be like when their children grow up. Sterilization is absolutely the way forward. Parents need to consider whether their decison for more kids is selfish, or not. There are so many unwanted children out there who could thrive if given the opportunity from adoptive parents. If the decision was mine I'd make it mandatory that EVERY parent is sterilized after their second child. Justine, you can get a normal IUD without the hormones that come with the Mirena. I've had mine for 2 years and have not had any symptoms as there are no hormones (I am personally very sensitive to these kinds of things, and had a very hard time on the pill - which left me overweight, bad skin, moody and it took my body nearly a year to return to normal after stopping the pill).

I have 3 beautiful PLANNED children and opted for sterilization after the birth of the last one. One of the reasons was the high stroke risk in my family history and therefore I wanted to stop taking the pill, or any other hormone type treatment. Best thing I ever did. No pills, no side effects, I've had no problems at all. To CTMOM, speak to your doc, you can still take the pill to control your cycle, it usually helps a lot.

I am a man who is happily married. Me and my wife have 3 children, after the third, I descided to ahve a vasectomy It was a bit painfull the first couple of days, but after that, everything is back to normal. Sex is better than ever!! No more condoms to remember and you don't have that "What if she gets pregnant again" thoughts.
    CTChick 7/3/2009 1:33:01 PM
I am always appalled when ignorant people start making statements that it is their "God Given right to produce children". God also instructed us human beings to take care of the earth, which we are destroying it by our preconcieved idea that we need to produce at such at an alarming rate. If we cannot take responsibility for our own family planning then I totally agree that mandatory sterilisation should be imposed.

I have 3 beutiful unplanned children, I got the first baby when I was 15 the second 22 and the 3rd at 28. With 3 diffefferent fathers, All these men were not ready to take responsibility and commit themselves to me. After the birth of my born I decided enough was enough and then I went to Marie Stoep clinic and did a sterilisation. Its about 8 to 9yrs now and I am a granny of a two weeks old baby girl at the age 37. I'm married to the fourth man in life but I've made it clear to him that NO MORE CHILDREN TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT and then he said he was cool. Now he's changed his mind he wants to have a baby, I told him to try nextdoor and get the hell out of my life. We are still together and I dont regret sterilisation, THAT WAS THE BEST THING I'VE EVER DID FOR MYSELF

I got sterilised in 2008 and fell pregnant 6 months thereafter. A week ago I sterilised again and this time the tubes were cut. When going for sterilise ask Dr to cut and not to use the clips.
