Big breasts?

How do you keep them in while you’re sweating it out? Share your advice.

If one more person in my taebo class advises me to get my breasts properly measured, I’m going to scream. Thing is, I’ve been. And thanks to the lovely sales assistant at Woolies, I am aware that my ‘ladies’ are a DD-cup.

But this knowledge – and THIS new bra – does not mean that exercising has become any less of a pain for me. 5 minutes into our routine and I still have to adjust myself (for those of you who don’t know the meaning of this, ‘adjust’ is a simple euphemism for pulling – quite literally - the ‘girls’ back into place).

For the many women out there who can relate, you also know that it makes exercising no fun.

I envy the women who, with their friendly A and B-cups, have no problem stretching, punching and jumping.

My breasts, or rather the size of them, have become a recurring nightmare. And were it not for the excellent results I’m getting, I think I would’ve quit the fitness buzz a long time ago.

A concerned friend once advised me to try a proper sports bra: “It’s great,” she claimed, “because it keeps them inside your bra.”

But, what she failed to mention was that it doesn’t offer any real support. Or at least this goes for the bras that I’ve had the displeasure of trying on.

So, how do you know if a bra is any good? Underwear specialists at Storm in A-G Cup recommend this for everyday bras:

What your bra should look like:

•    The strap around your body should be firm, but comfortable.

•    If you prefer the underwire variant then remember that the wires at the front should lie flat against your ribcage and should not rub against each other. Eina!

•    Your breasts should be enclosed in the cups with a smooth silhouette.

•    If your bra fits properly, the weight of the breast should be supported by the body of the bra and not solely by the shoulder straps.

What your bra should not look like:

•    If your bra is too loose and rides up your back, then you are wearing a back size that is way too big.

•    If there is a bulging at the top or sides, or the wires are standing away from your chest, you are probably wearing a too small cup size.

•    If you find that the shoulder straps dig in, it is likely that you are wearing the wrong bra size.

And there you have it, ladies. Now, can any of you tell me what a good-fitting sports bra should look like?

If you know, please share it with me and our lovely readers in the box below.

You should follow the same guidelines as for a normal bra: straps should not dig in, there should be no spillage and the back should not ride up. You need to jump around the fitting room a bit and see whether it keeps the girls from bouncing around too much. If you are a DD or DD+ you definitely cannot buy your bras from Woolworths! you need to go to a specialist bra shop. I've also seen a new range of Nike bras that look very supportive at Edgars. My strategy is to wear a sports bra, Jt one sports top (make sure it's tight, but not so much that you can't breathe) and then a looser top over that to conceal any lumps or bumps.
Kay 11/2/2009 9:53:49 AM
I had the same problem! What I found works best for me, is that I wear my normal bra and a sports bra. The bra gives the support i need, and the sports bra or vest keeps them in place.
JPP 11/2/2009 10:24:34 AM
Wear a sports bra next to your skin, then a cropped support top over that.
Gerlinde 11/2/2009 10:27:02 AM
The day I find a sports bra that works I'll shout it from the rooftops. No wonder that at the start of the century women wore corsets when they did sports, at least it keep the girls from flopping all over the place!
Koos 11/2/2009 10:33:53 AM
Woman look better without bra ! My advice is to "gooi dit weg" !
Juanita 11/2/2009 10:42:50 AM
I totally get this article. My ladies are also "D+" and it really is difficult to find something feminine let alone something that they will fit in properly. Let's not even talk about finding the right bikini top ......
Cute 11/2/2009 10:43:48 AM
I can so relate. The best bra that I use for running is by Playtex(? i think) and is called "Shock Absorber" Keeps everything in and hardly any "jiggle". I have seen it at Sportsman Warehouse. I get it in 32D. Hope this helps
@Koos 11/2/2009 10:45:38 AM
Ja Koos, I will "gooi dit weg" if you will ride the Argus cycle race in a pair of loose boxers! Wouldn't that be fun ... lol!
Pieman 11/2/2009 11:02:53 AM
This thread is useless without pictures! ;-)
Kat 11/2/2009 11:09:04 AM
I can relate! I too am a 32D / DD depending on the style of bra! I only buy bra's in woolies as they always have my size in various pretty styles and colours. Good to know Im not alone with my D's lol!
@ Koosie 11/2/2009 11:14:52 AM
Maybe you lack the 2 nuggets to make a comment like that. You don't have a clue as to how uncomfy a bra can be. Try wear no undies for a day...then comment!!!
Thabo 11/2/2009 11:20:18 AM
I can tell you that an apostrophe does not mean "look out! There's an 's' coming"!
Nerine Leonard 11/2/2009 12:02:19 PM
You have to trust me on this one - I have a sollution for you! I have four daughters, the first three all 32 E-cups!!! The fourth is still busy getting there, bless her sole! I have discovered an exercise bra after reading an article in the Fair Lady - I phoned Pandora Bra Studio in Sandton, 0118849029, and voila, before I knew it, my daughters were no longer bouncing about. At first glance, it seems like an insignificant piece of no good cloth, but once on, it's truly amazing. The only problem is the price, which is at this stage about R800! The first bra was bought in 2004, is used every day, and apart from not being as white as it used to be, is still in working condition. I have now bought four in total - a good investment! You ask for D, and the bra's code is 5521 - Good Luck
carin 11/2/2009 12:17:50 PM
if i win the lotto i'll have mine removed.i'm sick & tired of having to wear bra's, especially during summer months. guys, picture yourself being strangled for 18 hours p day - that's more or less what it feels like
BKR 11/2/2009 12:32:18 PM
i'm also a 34DD. I found an great sports bra at edgars in my size. It's call the shock absorber, imported from the UK and retails for around R250. The girls don't go anywhere and the support is amazing. For bikini's theres a store in Sandton city that specialises in bikini's and bras for the well endowed.
Reeva 11/2/2009 12:35:11 PM
My bra size is 38C which is not TOO bad. I sometimes find lovely bras that look great but the straps are soooo narrow they cut in to my shoulders and makes the bra very uncomfortable. The bigger size bras should have straps that are a tad wider and still look great
Jessie 11/2/2009 12:36:20 PM
Great advice ladies!!! I also struggle with my bra - I hate that I'm the only woman who has to stop during a routine to adjust myself. I also can't wear two bras because I feel too confined.
big boobs 11/2/2009 12:40:39 PM
i have the exact same problem... my "twins" are size 36D & i battle to find fitting bras that dont cost an arm & a leg! also, the cup has to be big enough to cover up the nipple, sometimes the cup falls just short & after a few movements, they are like looking out at the world!! there are times when i just wanna let them hang loose :) but im still proud of them... i would never get a boob reduction... :)
Jade 11/2/2009 12:48:26 PM
I'm so glad to heat that I'm not alone wearing a 34 DD, can anyone tell me where to find shirts that fit properly, please.
VH 11/2/2009 12:52:21 PM
ladies, i am a 32 E ... i think it just sucks that stores dont cater for our sizes.. i mean 32 D and above is no longer unusual
Nicola 11/2/2009 12:53:17 PM
Another thing to remember if you are exercising to lose weight is that your bra size may change as you shed those kilos. So the bra you start off with, may at some stage, be too big. Perhaps getting measured more regularly is part of the solution.
B 11/2/2009 1:35:47 PM
I swear by my TRIUMPH, TRI-ACTION SPORTS BRA. It's not pretty - but it does a magnificent job - even when I skip, and that says a lot.
Another B 11/2/2009 1:52:12 PM
What do you do when the backstrap rides up, but if you put the bra on any tighter it feels like you're being crushed in a bear-hold?!?! I have only found one Bra that seems to work, but not for exercising and that is the Woolies W-Studio brand. They've soft and fit really well.
Njabu 11/2/2009 1:57:02 PM
I have been blessed with E-cups andi know what you are talking about and the only solution to this is 2 bras.... a great support bra and the sports on top of that....
Badbones 11/2/2009 2:09:46 PM
I shop for bra's with my wife, she is a D, and I tell you "Storm in a G Cup" can't help here, so they are not that great, slack service as well ..... we shop every weekend, I have become a "Bra-specialist" ...... No idea where to get these things anymore ....
Tonnabricks 11/2/2009 2:15:01 PM
Excellent thread. Size isn't really the problem, My 'girls' are both heavy and large.(36G) Pandora is better but I'm still in no way able to run. What to do?
Koos 11/2/2009 2:55:19 PM
@Koosie and @Koos : For your info I don't wear undies for the past 3 years now, so I can comment. My wife love it ! And sorry i only ride superbikes, no 2wheeltraprubbish ! I'm only joking. I can not realy give advise but You all must have a GREAT day LOL !!!
Al 11/2/2009 2:55:20 PM
@Nerine Lombard. You probably mean "ask for DD"...
Claudine 11/2/2009 2:58:19 PM
Try this website: www.bravissimo.co.uk. They have an amazing range!
Neil G 11/2/2009 3:05:47 PM
You have my sympathies, girls. I am a road runner and I have seen many big breasted girls struggling (including mrs G). I had a friend that had a reduction and she told me many times that she has never regretted it. She really enjoyed the freedom to take part in active sports. Perhaps you should consider it ? I now my missus would if we could afford it
Jo Jo 11/2/2009 3:10:00 PM
Ladies - I hear you. I wear a 36DD bra and the only ones I have found that support and look nice (i.e. not a granny bra) is from La Senza, but at around R450.00 each its not a cheap option. As for Sports Bras - I have a Shock absorber, but am not mad about it. I would however like to suggest to chiropractors, etc, that have you lie on your stomach to work on your back - to have indents made in their 'beds' to accommodate the 'girls'. They are damn uncomfortable to lie on!
Tam 11/2/2009 3:16:30 PM
Definitely playtex shock absorber works wonders .... also try swimming, it is a cardio and toning workout that will support the ladies and is not painful to workout !
steminibos 11/2/2009 3:21:24 PM
I am a man with a similar problem, my penis is so long, I cannot wear rugby shorts or normal jocks, and have to tape it to my leg for gympurposes, and wear real baggy shorts, but even then some excercises forces the material tight, I can see the ladies stare and the lads at the shower are also making fun, as I yelp when removing the tape... is there any support clothing that could help me...
Connie 11/2/2009 3:24:35 PM
My bra size is 38E, and I mainly wear sports-bras (I hate underwire and don't like lace). The Shock-Absorbers are great, as are the Triumph TRI-ACTION sports bras. They cost you an arm and a leg, but they are worth it.
Woolies also makes sports bras, but only up to cup D (which is a pity)

Malema 11/2/2009 3:28:39 PM
Can I Give Advice ....?
Zuma 11/2/2009 3:34:22 PM
I'm a "small dick man" and bra's don't help me either !
Heath 11/2/2009 3:52:02 PM
I wear a 40G and cannot find a sprts bra anywhere. Obviously big ladies are not supposed to exercise! I cannot afford Pandora's prices, I find them way too expensive even if they are good quality. I wish manufacturers realised that there is a lucrative market for bigger busted ladies.
Nelly 11/2/2009 3:52:10 PM
I am a size 34E-I am also short and small but I love the girls.I also struggle to find sexy underwear and the only place that has nice styles seems to be Woolworths. I can't comment on exercise as I prefer to rather watch my girls relax. Then again it seriously is an issue that needs attention. No use in selling underwear if the market does not cater for you.
Sarah 11/2/2009 3:54:08 PM
Why don't they make in-between cup sizes as well? When I try on a C-cup it is too small and a D-cup is too big. I have been measured and they suggested a D cup and I could add some padding.
Angus 11/2/2009 4:17:01 PM
Try to lose some weight. This will make "the ladies" smaller and you will be able to excercise much easier. Most overweight & obese ladies have "large girls". The problem can be rectified by eating less chips, fries/fatty foods and changing to a healthy lifestyle. It will also minimise your risk of getting breast cancer. Both my daughters are skinny and does not seem to have the problem Meagan is talking about. It is amazing how fat deposits can build up all over your body especially within your cacoons.
Nicola 11/2/2009 4:33:20 PM
Definitely try Shock Absorbers as mentioned above... by Platex I think. You can get them at Edgars. Not sure on available sizes, but they really are good and have padded straps for comfort
Esli 11/2/2009 5:23:32 PM
I wear a 38DD, and I am just so thankful that I still have my girls, without any medical problems like breast cancer?
Cape lovely 11/2/2009 5:40:33 PM
...my lil crisis is that I have a small back and a big set...so it rides up my back and i get muffin tops...and its quiet a bother to have 2 "tuck" them back in while im exercising...I'm currently wearing a 38C...any advice?
jason 11/2/2009 8:28:49 PM
Lets do this... ladies send in pics of their boobs and the guys will decide on the bra! Then you kill two birds with one stone: ridding yourself of undecidedness and knowing you have a bra pleasing to the gents. Win-win.
burtfred 11/2/2009 9:45:44 PM
can any one tell me what to do with my manboobs when i jog?
Fransie D 11/3/2009 1:12:30 AM
Useless article. No pictures.
Phillippa 11/3/2009 7:57:38 AM
2 bras is definitely the way to go. Normal and sports. So you get both types of support. Then I wear a vest with hidden support too.

@ Angus I am sure the reason she is doing Tae Bo in the first place is to lose weight. :)
preshen govender 11/3/2009 8:19:40 AM
Q: Why do 90% gals have left boob bigger than right?
A: Bcoz 90% boys are right handed.
PRESHEN GOVENDER 11/3/2009 8:21:50 AM
Why do when women get breast they wear training bra's what do boobs have to train for?
Phillippa 11/3/2009 9:02:36 AM
@Cape Lovely Have you tried a 36D?
I think if your back is small you need a much smaller size, but the cup size can go up to compensate. Try it... I can usually go between a 34D and a 36C
Nerine Leonard 11/3/2009 9:09:21 AM
No, Al, I mean ask for "D", that's the manager of Pandora's. And it's Leonard, not Lombard.
Aurie 11/3/2009 9:12:19 AM
Useless article,no pictures
nerine 11/3/2009 9:17:31 AM
Dear Angus, my daughter is in perfect shape, she wears a 34 size and she's gorgeous, boobs and all! I, on the other hand, is very much overweight, but do not have the same problem!
nerine 11/3/2009 9:21:23 AM
And by the way, Angus, I know of men getting breast cancer - and I'm even aware of a case where a doctor had all his dauthers' breasts removed because of a gene-problem with breast cancer, and still one of them got the cancer - size has absolutely nothing to do with it!
cz 11/3/2009 10:56:22 AM
sports tops/bra with a built in bra top over. preferably these two items should have different straps... eg if your sports top has normal straps, then wear a t-back top over etc.
Angus 11/3/2009 1:22:29 PM
Size has EVERYTHING to do with it. They've found a direct link between obesity/overweight and cancer. Naturally fat men will also be more prone to cancer. I didn't say just obese women. Stop stuffing your face with unhealthy fries/chips/cake and you will become smaller - all over your body. Fat sweaty women with large loose hanging cacoons are NOT attractive to any man.
Karin 11/3/2009 2:31:04 PM
@Angus : don't you think that the reason someone wants to find out about a supportive sports bra is because she wants to train and loose weight?
nerine 11/3/2009 4:19:45 PM
Yes, sure, breast cancer thrives on fat, but very thin women can have big boobs - so to lose weight would not be the answer. My sister was thin, small boobs, and died of breast cancer by the way.
Shamsham 11/3/2009 4:50:23 PM
@Angus - please shut the f**k up
christina 11/3/2009 10:43:38 PM
I get confused about my bra size. The 40E rides up. 38E is cutting my shoulders. E cups are the right cups, the 38 and 40 is really confusing. Maybe i should try Pandora.
Melanie 11/4/2009 9:49:56 AM
I am a 38D and cannot stand the twins. Will have a breast reduction anytime.
Kelly 11/4/2009 1:09:09 PM
you are all upsetting me........my girls have never gotten beyond a 32AA......i would give just about anything for them to bounce around a bit and need to be adjusted :)

I am a 32 E and I have found the most awesome shop in Kloof (KZN) that only caters for large busts. Check out http://www.lauralingerie.co.za/, I haven't seen a sports bra in there yet but the lady in the shop is super helpful, the bras are beautiful and they should be getting bikinis in soon
twin towers 11/4/2009 1:17:20 PM
I know this is going to sound crazy but I am a 42DD and HATE with a passion wearing a bra. In fact I can go without a bra and you would not notice unless I started jumping up and down - and I am not bragging, I am just blessed with firm breasts - however, having said that - put them in a bra (ANY bra) and I feel like I am coming around the corner twin tower first! the first thing I take off on coming home is the bra - it lies on the staircase until I go upstairs... I never ever wear a bra at home and would have a breast reduction at the drop of a hat if it were not so expensive. I even had a sports bra made especially for me and I hate that too (thought it would make me feel less conscious of my big boobs) I just hate the confines of a bra I guess. I am 65 and guess I should be grateful for what I have but I really would like to be a respectable 36 anyday!

Having had to put up with a G cup size, my best advice would be to have a proper fitting with an expert. Pandora Bra Studio in Parkmore is fabulous and they carry a variety of gorgeous bras
Ruth 11/4/2009 3:03:57 PM
It's a sad fact that many women give up all forms of physical activity once they leave school simply because of the discomfort they suffer as a result of 'the bounce factor'. This is regrettable as exercise is so important in maintaining a healthy balance in one's life.
Sportswomen need to understand the anatomy of our breasts. Their main function is to house the mammary glands which are embedded in fatty tissue for their protection. There is no muscle in the breasts, but they are held in place on the pectoral muscle by Cooper's ligaments and a trinagle of skin extending from the chin to the base of the breast and outwards to the armpit; this 'natural bra' acts like the very broad straps of a bra, and it is the condition of this skin which determines the shape, position and firmness of the bust. In the bra business it's not unusual to fit a thin girl with a 30H or 32G cup bra or, at the other end of the scale, a large lady with a broad back but A- or B-cup breasts.
Cooper's ligaments are a network of strong mesh-like fibres which hold the breasts firmly on the ribcage; once over-stretched, however, they do not regain their elasticity, hence the term 'Cooper's Droop'. Druing physical activity, it is of the utmost importance that the breasts are firmly supported both above and below the nipple to minimise 'bounce' as far as possible. Recent research in the UK proved that 'the bounce factor' can be reduced by a whopping 74% simply by wearing a well-designed, correctly fitting sports bra, not an ordinary, every-day bra.
At Pandora Bra Studio we have several styles of sports bras which will see you through the whole spectrum of exercise, from walking and cycling through to marathon-running and kick-boxing! For further information and advice please contact Ruth ('your breast friend') at Pandora Bra Studio, Century City, on 021 528 7591.

Hi All. I am a runner. I see a lot of ladies running with a crop-top without real breast support. Does not look healthy, although the men likes it. Visit the runnersworld.co.za or comrades.com website and search the forums there. This topic has been discussed a couple of times with some good ideas. One tip I can give is to use some vaceline under the breast before you start exercising and this will help the chafing problem after a little bit of bouncing.
crocks 11/4/2009 9:20:44 PM
Hmm, I don’t have a problem with Koos's plan, and I understand the ladies have a problem, but let me tell you seeing the “ladies” bounce in unison is very distracting for some of us at the gym, which had I cycled the “Argus” in loose boxers might have caused some disturbance....not that I am complaining mind you ;-)
mop 11/4/2009 11:57:49 PM
I am a 28GG and always found it impossible to find any bras at all. But I've recently found a UK import sports bra by a brand called PureLime that works. They make them in a large range of sizes and the shoulder straps can be worn straight or crossed over which compensates for size differences for mine. Hope this helps someone!
Paul 11/5/2009 9:56:44 AM
Breastfeeding after the birth of our first borne helped my wife in reducing her breast size. She went from a D to a C-.
Angus @ Paul 11/5/2009 11:28:45 AM
So Paul what are you saying? Should all women with large cacoons become pregnant breastfeed and afterwards be happy with their smaller size? What a STUPID argument. Some of the ladies commenting here are over 60 and will not be able to fall pregant.

My point is that they should go on a fierce diet and this will solve the problem. Why do people critisize my comments but say nothing to Paul's idiotic comments?
Badger 11/6/2009 2:25:40 PM
JASON ??? You crack me up Ha Ha Ha ha Ha Ha
Tanya 11/12/2009 8:06:45 PM
try being a 32J they don't make high impact sports bra's, try Bravissimo they should have something for you http://www.bravissimo.com/products/lingerie/sports-bras
Kel 11/13/2009 2:31:52 PM
I play provincial sports and have suffered from this problem for years to the point where I have given up most of my spoting activities. Over and above the cup size I also have the broad swimmers back so the cm needed are also quite high. I always wonder what it looks like from the side line to watch a person with large breast running on a hockey field, it has made me self conscience. Living away from the main urban centres also makes bra-shopping difficult with most sports bras stock for small women with obviously large implants. I rarely find a D cup bigger than a 34 -36 cm. My solution has been to snap up sports bras when I find them and use them till the fall apart, I then double up by putting one of the built-in support gym tops over, not ideal playing in Lowveld heat conditions but until this year the only way I felt comfortable playing sport. Now I have back problems and will quite happily have the tat twins reduce considerably in a milisecond if it meant a healthier more active lifestyle.
chrys 11/29/2009 10:25:06 AM
I am a 34D cup and have tried many different sports bras. All that works is wearing an underwire sports bra to support you from below (stop them from falling out) and wear a crop top over that (stop them from bouncing out the top). I wear a gym top with inner support over that! I does make breathing a little difficult, but you get used to it and worry less about how much more your breasts are sagging after each workout. I've used expensive brands, but I find that their bras are just huge and ugly and give me no more support than the triumph ones I currently wear :)
Nolu 12/14/2009 2:50:13 PM
I'm a runner and trying to lose weight, Currently I wear a size 36DD but the DD doesn't seem to be right as the underwire is hanging and hurting my skin and, I think maybe an E might help. I had no idea that there are shops that sell 36E I will surely check them out. As for my running I try to do it very early in the morning without any bra as I am hoping that will reduce the size. I feel that if i strap them in the bra then they aren't doing any work and how can they be reduced if they don't execise. (My thinking). At the gym, I wear a very small sports bra that holds them in nicely. The one I have now is XS from Mr Price, works well.
Lady 12/14/2009 2:56:53 PM
@Nolu Never, NEVER run without a bra. Your boobs don't work when running anyway - they bounce, so they'll just lose elasticity and become saggy. Always wear a sports bra when exercising.
preshen govender 12/29/2009 4:56:23 PM
if you have an invented nipper does it make it a minus cup size?
PRESHEN GOVENDER 12/29/2009 4:59:33 PM
@Nolu,maybe you should get a strait-jacket instead of a sport bra.It help keep them in place and will not knock you out
@Angus 1/3/2010 8:03:51 PM
Breast size is due to a combination of genetics and body fat percentage.. You are such an idiot..
Booby prize 1/11/2010 2:46:14 PM
It looks likle there arent shops in SA that cater for large breasted woman? Am I correct? Having seen many african woman walking about, most would put DD's to shame what are they wearing?
Runner 2/5/2010 1:09:29 PM
Hi guys. I'm a 36E and love running. The only problem is my large breasts. I run with a normal bra and over that a full bathing costume and then my club shirt. This really helps alot but I sweat more and get really hot! Thank you for all your tips - I now have a list of bra's I am definately going to try out!
