Stupid, stupid drinking laws

Lili Radloff isn't ready to have LSD Sundays yet, so give her booze FFS.

Can somebody please tell me how it is that I live in one of the best wine producing regions in the world and yet, whenever I want to buy a bottle of wine on a Sunday, I have to prove my worthiness to some dodgy quickshop clerk with a secret handshake and a code word just so that I can pay an extortionate amount of money for a bottle of plonk?

If you’re not very good at planning ahead – and I’m really, really not – every Sunday lunch, every late weekend braai or impromptu midweek party has to be celebrated with an R80 bottle of Graca.

Sorry for you, if you wanted, say, a beer or, heaven help you, a whisky or two.

Ja Mom, I know what you’re going to say… ek wou mos Kaap toe trek.

I guess I understand the naïve kind of reasoning behind it. Sure, there exists a connection between alcohol and crime. Just as there appears to exist a connection between strippers and cat, tik and lying, and ecstasy and kak music.

But dudes, how exactly does making it difficult to buy booze on a Sunday help the cause?

I can’t help feeling these antiquated alcohol prohibitions are still there only because politicians are too cowardly to change them. And then we have to listen to their stupid lip service about protecting the public. Really? Where were you then when I needed protection from a bottle of vodka on Saturday?

But thank God this craziness is not only happening in South Africa. I’m starting to think that policy makers across the world are all nuts. They’re so scared to get their hands dirty, that they put totally unreasonable laws in place that fly in the face of logic to protect their own hides.

You might have read about a report that was recently released by the UK government’s chief drugs adviser Professor Nutt*. The report listed widely used drugs from most to least harmful. Turns out alcohol and cigarettes are more harmful than many illegal drugs, including LSD, cannabis and ecstasy.

Now anyone with a vague grasp of reality and slightly more common sense than, say, Rodney flippen Seal, will see the truth in Nutt’s findings and the immense value in such a report. It is a hard truth but people die in their HORDES every year from nicotine and alcohol abuse. And it’s not helped by the “drugs are bad, mkay” but smoke and drink your little heart out culture we have.

Nutt pointed out how stupid, and dangerous the “artificial separation of alcohol and tobacco from other, illegal drugs [is].”

To which Mr. Politician responded by saying he “cannot have public confusion between scientific advice and policy”

Heh? Shouldn’t policy be based on scientific advice, mebbe?

For fok’s sake, it’s not like Nutt started handing out Es at primary schools. The man simply pointed out that we’re kidding ourselves in thinking our legal drugs are any less dangerous than the type you buy from hippies and Nigerians.

What happened to Nutt? He got fired. Yes, bizarrely, when the chief drugs adviser gave advice on drugs, they fired his ass.

Guess the gap between science and politics really is unbridgeable.

But good advice or not, I’m not quite ready yet to make LSD Sundays and midweek Es part of my routine. So it would be really, really nice if I could buy a nice bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, which was (stupidly maybe) still legal the last time I checked, whenever the hell I wanted to.

*ironically, if hilariously, his real name

Move to JHB! Our bottlestores/spars etc all sell alcohol on a Sunday until 3pm.
ange 11/3/2009 12:35:39 PM
I sympathise; I always have to rush off on Saturday afternoon to buy twice as much wine as usual in order to cover Sunday. Really helpful in curbing my alcoholism ;-) You can buy booze at Century City on Sundays; also in town somewhere... not sure where. There are a couple of places that have "tourist" licences and they don't ask you to prove that you're a tourist, hehehe :-)
jo 11/3/2009 12:39:42 PM
it is childish. You can't buy alcohol on Sundays in some places, but you can DRINK alchohol on Sundays?

DirkM 11/3/2009 2:03:38 PM
Lilli, you often write about yourself and alcahol. From this article it seems you have a, uhhm, "need". Go get treatment, dear, before it ruins you.
Cath 11/3/2009 2:04:47 PM
Fabulously said! My sentiments exactly. Politicians don't know their arseholes from a hole in the ground most of the time anyway!
griff 11/3/2009 2:10:05 PM
Lili, jy sal maar moet leer om beter te beplan. Adapt or die it seems. My kop is gewoonlik te fokken seer op Sondae om te worry oor drank, nog minder oor JOU blerrie drank.

Dave, mens spel (en skryf) oënskynlik met 'n deëlteken. Daar is niks met Lili verkeerd nie. Dis 2009. Welkom.
Sunday date 11/3/2009 2:29:18 PM
Lili, Lets make Sunday our first date? Dinner and vino on me...
Lou 11/3/2009 2:42:11 PM
Good point: there is no causal link between criminalisaing something and reduced consumption. Restaurants, shebeens and bars are all still lisenced to sell when liquor stores are closed. Alcoholism is not a problem of supply, it a problem of demand.
Alison 11/3/2009 2:46:23 PM
Cool article, Lili.
I'm with your mom on this one, though "jy wou mos Kaap toe trek"! In Gauteng we can buy 'dop' just about any time - if you know where to go:)
Women24 Ed 11/3/2009 2:56:13 PM
@sundaydate Everyone wants to date Lili. (Except those who have labeled her a 'race traitor', obviously. And I say to you what I say to everyone... "Tough." :)
Powerman 11/3/2009 3:01:36 PM
Now if you lived in Stellenbosch for the last 10 yearsd the two farm stall on the Somerset West road (R$$) have bottle stores open every sunday where you can get the widest range of booze you could imagine, at really good prices as well
TinX 11/3/2009 3:57:56 PM
Why on earth did I think that it was because of some religion thing? Sunday's being "church/family day" (I apologise if this makes no sense...I’m not religious at all, so I’m not sure of the correct terminology)

Perhaps someone will know…
Jared 11/3/2009 4:16:41 PM
Lili I love you! Come to me in your pink dress and I'll feed you as much champagne and vodka as you'd like. Without roofies.
gazza 11/3/2009 4:20:48 PM
Its not sold on Sunday due to religious reasons Sunday is a holy day. So keep something for God please, you all enjoy your religios holidays during the year imagine if there were no religion then you wouldnt have the odd day off.
TinX 11/3/2009 4:40:18 PM
Thank you Gazza.

So in all...this article is pointless.

Simple solution...don't drink on Sunday's. What the hell is wrong with you! spend time with your family...sober!

Perhaps someone should write an article on pointless articles ;)
wine lands residant 11/3/2009 4:43:00 PM
Tell me something, who do you stay in the "best wine producing regions in the world" and drink an R80 bottle of Gracca when for R80 you can actually legally buy a couple of world class wines straight from the wine farm??? Are you too lazy to actually drive to one of the hundreds of wine farms in your area and support the farms.

You might just enjoy the wine tasting so much and write about that and not the fact that you illegally purchased an bottle of Gracca. Just an though use it don't use it, whatever
@lili 11/3/2009 4:56:14 PM
Lili - in Cape Town you can get wine on a Sunday at Carolines in the Waterfront or if you are really desperate and want to a support an idiot - Vaughn Johnsons - also in the Waterfront. I also think the Aroma in Canal Walk is open as well as the Pick n Pay bottle store in Canal Walk. Its all about knowing where to go.
Craig 11/3/2009 5:08:21 PM
Haha: "Just as there appears to exist a connection between ... ecstasy and kak music."

Personally, it doesn't bother me to drink something else if alcohol (of whatever form) is not available. Yet, I agree wholeheartedly that it is utterly ridiculous to restrict its sale on Sundays.

@gazza
You are welcome to keep whatever you wish for 'god' - but don't dictate to me what I can and can't do on My day of rest.
agreed 11/3/2009 5:12:54 PM
i agree! it makes absoutley no sense. why is there a law that is unwanted. this should be visited and decided on by someone with the balls to change it
Skeptic 11/3/2009 5:40:55 PM
Go to any "open" wine farm and buy your heart out on Sundays. I never stress - most of the farms are open and you can taste and buy your wine. That is the beauty of the Cape! To all the religious people - do not force your rituals/beliefs on other people. Not everybody is the same, and we live in an open society.
sue 11/3/2009 5:43:38 PM
I agree as long as everyone's responsible drinkers, which I'm afraid most are not. Yes I know I'm generalising, but hey what about the smoking laws it's rediculous. Personally this law should also apply to drinking! Sorry boozers but alcohol changes lives, kills, abuses and more.....
Strini 11/3/2009 6:26:16 PM
I think the logic behind it is like this ...

There are some people who are "alcoholics". They would drink more than they can handle on the weekend. They would generally buy their alcohol as and when they feel for it. Now, if an alcoholic were to drink to their hearts content on a Sunday it means that this may cause problems at their work places on the Monday (if they get to work). To avoid this the law is setup such that they cannot get their hands on Alcohol on a Sunday. They get to work on a Monday. They are more productive at work. The business is happy. There is less chance of someone getting fired. This helps by not contributing unemployment.
Nesomaniac 11/3/2009 7:18:35 PM
So where the hell do you live - purchasing wines on a Sunday has been the norm for a long time in my little corner of the Eastern Cape - not only that but bottle stores are open Sundays as well. So, really, if you can't plan ahead you deserve to go wild on fruit juice!
Maximus 11/3/2009 8:34:14 PM
Isn't this all an urban legend? The only reason you can't drink on a Sunday is .. it may lead to dancing.
Tut tut
XXX 11/3/2009 8:41:58 PM
The mind boggles that someone so stupid could live so long. Alcohol is an drug and you sure are addicted and in denial.
Billy of Arabia 11/3/2009 9:05:31 PM
Excellent points - reminds me of Mbeki who also had a separation between science and policy in that he decided AIDS and HIV were not related...
Maria 11/4/2009 1:28:02 AM
Plan ahead and then pace yourself so that you don't imbibe all and sit droebek on Sunday. Have a thought for those persons that have to live with the scourge of a friend or family member that go to the extremes. Sometimes their only day of peace comes on Sunday when that person has drunk everything they could lay their hands on, on Saturday. Pace yourself child, pace yourself!
robert 11/4/2009 6:46:04 AM
Alcohol should be banned worldwide!! It is the substance responsible for more murders, accidents, abuse, domestic violence, broken homes, destroyed careers and lives than any other substance. Other substances are banned, but the only reason alcohol is allowed is the fact that it is a huge industry and human greed will not allow it to be banned. I cannot understand why people need to drink alcohol to be happy, to me it is like playing on the edge of a volcano's crater.
Ascendo Tuum 11/4/2009 6:48:16 AM
I cant understand people who cant seem to enjoy themselves unless there is alcohol involved. What a sad bunch you are! And no I am not an 80 bible thumping nun. I am a 40 yo, male aethist who has never been drunk once in his life. My last 'drink' was sometime in March and since then have enjoyed braais and get togethers with ne'er a drop of booze in sight. Personally I think Nutt was right on the nut.
Desha 11/4/2009 6:48:42 AM
I have a solution. Stop drinking and you won't have to worry about where to buy your wine on a Sunday. Easy as that or can't you enjoy yourself without alcohol?
Marcel 11/4/2009 6:59:47 AM
Me thinks some people protest too much, because if the "law" states that "Christians" may not buy alcohol on Sundays but everyone else may....I wonder how many "Christians" will be caught out ! Hah !

Shame shame.
Thobi @Lili dear 11/4/2009 7:59:57 AM
oh Lili oh Lili, looks like 3 days from sunday you haven't got you graca or shot of whatever eases your nerves dear. cranky cranky!
Mousekewitz 11/4/2009 8:41:37 AM
KwaZulu Natal is like that too and its crazy. On the odd occasion when friends drop in to visit and you end up having an impromtu braai, you can't even go off and get a bottle of wine or a six pack. We are not big drinkers so we don't stock up for 'just in case' but maybe we should cos it makes spontaneouty (sp) a little difficult.
Franna 11/4/2009 8:56:10 AM
The reason is Sunday is a holy day. I propose that we also prohibit the sale of tip-ex, paint, thinners, knifes (anything sharp) and using any profane language after 9 am - also no farting in bed on Sunday mornings (except if you are Julius)
Baas Koos 11/4/2009 9:39:12 AM
lol... stock op die saterdag..... Holy or not.... in the bible it says to enjoy it! otherwise they wouldnt had wine during ''nagmaal''!
Andy 11/4/2009 9:51:22 AM
Not very bright, are you, Lili? Girls like shopping, right? So, go wine shopping on a Monday, post a bottle to yourself and mark it: "only to be opened on Sunday". If you find it arrives too late adjust your calendar accordingly. If, after buying the wine you need a further shopping fix, go and buy some fancy wrapping paper to gift wrap your plonk, etc and etc until all your urges are satisfied.
Bonny 11/4/2009 10:13:19 AM
Umm, maybe you just answered your own question here..Turns out alcohol and cigarettes are more harmful than many illegal drugs, including LSD, cannabis and ecstasy."
Karen 11/4/2009 10:22:04 AM
Aside from the religious aspects of alcohol on sundays, why have the powers that be made different decisions for different regions of South Africa? In Joburg you can buy a bottle of wine at any retail outlet. How come its so different in Cape Town? I dont see why the retailers like Pnp and Checkers cant sell wine on Sundays. And we make the flipping stuff here!!
Michael 11/4/2009 10:34:25 AM
That really pisses me off!
You can get wine at church, but dont pick up the bottle of wine at the supermarket, cos u cant pay for it on sundays. Been tempted to take it to the teller and if they tell me I cant buy it, break it then an there!
Angus 11/4/2009 10:44:30 AM
I do agree with Lili although I don’t appreciate her use of swear words. I’m a regular wine drinker (approximately 3 to 4 glasses a night – it is healthy) and really becomes agitated when not a single shop sells liquor on a Sunday. Fortunately I have identified two shebeens located close to my house. The thing is that I don’t like to go into these shebeens as the alcoholics frequenting these places would never form part of my inner circle of sophisticated friends. It’s quite noisy inside and the music is definitely not to my taste. But ja I am sometimes forced to visit these revolting places.
The wine that I get from these drinking holes is quite expensive and like Lili mentioned in her article, you are playing with your life when you risk buying from a shebeen. Inside the tavern there is a lot of fighting and arguing going on and you may be attacked by a broken beer bottle.
My conclusion is that the government should allow all retailers to sell liquor on a Sunday. Crime stats are high enough in this country and you don’t want to become part of yet another statistic just by buying wine from a shebeen.
Curveball 11/4/2009 10:52:47 AM

Seeing that you live in Cape Town, there is the harley liquor store or the one in Canal Walk that sells booze till 5 every Sunday!

Craig

No one says you cant drink on a Sunday were just saying get off you lazy .... and buy it on Saturday. Every Sunday after church I braai and I always make sure there is a 6 pack in the fridge do the same and stop moaning. Beleive me guys you can still have just as much fun with god in your life I do!!!
CityGirl 11/4/2009 1:03:25 PM
Hey,i agree with Bonny, you got your own question answered, LSD and canabis are MUCH LESS harmfull and maybe it wouldnt do you any harm to switch to LSD Sundays or E wednesdays. The people doing that dont complain:)
fatti 11/4/2009 1:58:26 PM
@strini:i truly battle 2 see any logic in what u sed.so its ok for them 2 be unproductive tuesday-friday,but G-d forbid not on monday? eh??and alcolohics WILL find booze if they want it. to the "holy day" theory: the day of rest was in fact on a saturday,so i dnt get the whole dont drink on a sunday crap.@angus:ur a dumbass.i know many shebeens that hold far more sophisticated, and capable ppl than normal bars/restuarants.just bcos u get 2 drink pricier stuff more often than not, in "socially acceptable" surrounding, dusnt mean u and ur m8es r immune to being "unsophisticated". it just means ure better off prats.personally,i luv nuthin more than tokin a lovely blunt&sippin a good red wine:)any day of the week,in any province.i ALWAYS find what i need :)lili, governments all over the world mke way 2 much money off tobbs and booze 2 outlaw it now,and they cant enforce the same sort of taxes on the other substances u mentioned, cos its 2 easy to selfmanufacture.i dnt believe it has anything 2 do with looking out for the consumers health,as like u sed, then alcohol&ciggs wuld be banned. laterz..
Marc 11/4/2009 2:12:31 PM
Great article Lili; witty, pithy and to the point. It's interesting how the people with extreme points of view feel the need to attack others with them hey? If Sunday alcohol sales are arranged to prevent Monday absenteeism, then where is the consistency? You can go to lots of drinking holes on a Sunday, in Cape Town there's Midmar Liquors, Picardi Rebel on the foreshore and Harleys all selling booze on a Sunday, so why not the supermarkets? And why can supermarkets sell wine and not beer which has half the alcohol per volume?
I don't have to have alcohol to have a good time, but I enjoy a dop. If the stories about Jesus are true (as some of your readers would like us to believe) he had nothing against an occasional tipple and even supplied his friends! If somebody opened a bottle store on Sundays called "Water into Wine" would it make you feel better about buying there? This issue has got nothing to do with religion or alcoholism any more, even though the law might have been loosely based on those tenets. The continuing existence of these antiquated, unfair and unevenly applied laws is, as you say, the result of our lawmakers not being able to get off their lazy asses and doing what they should: serving the people who elected them.
And, by the way, people: a little vernacular language is perfectly natural in normal conversation, why not in a humourous opinion piece? To whit: get your collective heads out of your collective bums and get over yourselves. Or just don't click on a link if you don't like what you found there last time!

If they want to stop Alcoholics, the price should be doubled. Same with ciggs. You can still drink and smoke your money away, but you will be doing less. We should grow up and act like adult.
Summertime 11/4/2009 4:11:52 PM
I wholeheartedly agree, Lili. A glass of wine on a Sunday is lovely. And on Monday, just cos you made it through work. And Wednesday, cos your halfway through the week. And Thursday, cos it's almost the weekend. And Friday, cos the weekend is here. And Saturday, cos it's sociable. So that leaves Tuesday to deal with. Makes life a LOT easier.

I have to salute any journalist open-minded enough to be informed about drugs, and to be brave enough to mention it in a article. Just remember that you are not open-minded enough if you do not do the acid-trip Sunday ritual at least once. Its true that the governments do make a lot of money from taxes on cigs and booze, but they prefer taxing these substances because tobacco and booze tend to make people more dull in mind, body, and spirit.

legalize the 'erb!!!! 'I don't know if hemp will save the world, but it's the only thing that can.' - quote from the father of hemp. Are you an addict 11/5/2009 9:04:22 AM
If you are that dependent on alcohol to have a "good" time on a Sunday, then you clearly have problem, and need to get your priorities straight. I say cut the tax on our salaries and double, no, triple the tax on alcohol, and maybe when our country puts down the bottle we will get somewhere.

You probably grew up in a home where people abused numerous substances. Government should tax idiots like you at double the tax rate.

With regards to the “swear” words----who appointed the ones ridiculing?

You might as well decide the word “bread” is a swear word like someone did with the F—word----it’s a joke!!!! Please take off the blinkers !!!!!!!!!

The Berea Spar, until recently, sold wine on Sundays but the wine section is now cordoned off on a Sunday. When the manager is not there the staff are happy to sneak me a bottle of wine. The whole set-up is rediculous. And why can we not buy beer at the supermarket. I hate going to bottle stores - they are so ugly and reek. Really, the liquer outlest in this country need lessons in display. As for the staff, they no buggerall about the wine they stock.
Capital Q 11/5/2009 11:45:27 AM
Lili - there are a couple of bottle stores open until 5 pm on Sunday in the central CBD. One is the Midmar in Buitengracht - as well as Harley's (who are REAL expensive). Try them - there's no need for panic or to visit the sketchy corner store.
Suzarne 11/5/2009 12:38:37 PM
Ag Lili, I'll sommer slap you silly. You can buy wine on a Sunday, come to Somerset West and you can purchase your wine on a Sunday at Manuka Cafe and Wine Boutique, they have a license to sell on Sundays.

There.... your problem is solved, have a stunning day.
Tershia 11/5/2009 1:36:14 PM
I am in Cape Town, we support our local shebeens on Sundays & we get a variety from which to choose, so Cape Town is not at all that bad on a Sunday for liquor purchases.

Regarding not liking going to the shebeens - Whahahah, that was the funniest thing I've read in a long time. You did mean it as a joke didn't you. Nobody can be that hipocritical to go to commit a crime and then complaining about the establishment where he has to commit it.

I'm with you sister.

But even more funny, in Texas I was standing at the till 11:50 and got a "sorry we are only allowed to sell alcohol from 12:00 pm.". Turns out they had to soften the rules to accomodate for Sunday night football.

Hypocrites.

Not all religions are anti-liquor. Catholics get to drink wine in church..nothing wrong with that.

Han I was referring to the fact that mostly criminals visit these places. What are you on about? There's a higher probability that you might become a victim of violence in these shabeens.
