Romancing the blog (her story)
A tale of how love blossomed between two bloggers, "Dolce" and "Kyknoord" over two years...
We met online. No no. Not like that. We didn't fill out a profile form and tick the obligatory boxes. Rather, we read each other's blogs for over 2 years. And then we fell in love.
I found his blog when he won a blogger prize in 2006. I was just starting my own blog and his was one of the first I followed regularly.
Admiration quickly turned into a big old blog-crush. He was articulate, talented, candid and very, very funny. He wrote with a razor sharp wit and I can remember often literally LOLing at his quirky view on the world.
I remember finding his flicker page and wondering how one guy could write so well and take such good photos too. I read about his divorce, his daughter, his work, his adventures in Cape Town's traffic on his trusty scooter.
I followed his move from paragraphs into clever cartoons. He quoted Shakespeare, mentioned his part time job at Fine Music Radio and wove hilarious stories around the amateur theatre productions he was involved in.
I got to know him, in a strange way, and in between wondering if he was real, I have to admit I was smitten.
He was that unimaginable, perfect guy.
But I'd been burnt online before. Met the trolls and the predators. Tried the online dating. Done the blogger meets and tweet-ups. So I was happy to maintain the anonymity of blog banter.
After all, he was married, then he was getting divorced, then he was dating. I put it down to a nice fantasy and a regular RSS hook up.
Until December 2007.
His blogs took a darker turn. He went through a break up and got some bad news about his health. I emailed him. I was seeing someone at the time, so it was a gesture of friendship, an offer of a drink during a rough time.
We didn't manage to arrange that drink until March, by which time I was single again. We met at my local pub, and as soon as I walked in I knew him. He had the kindest eyes and his whole face lit up in a smile. I made him wait for a month before we kissed. We've been together ever since. And we still read each other's blogs.
