Flies: How to get rid of 'em

Why is it that as soon as summer sticks out its sunny head so too does the common house fly? See why this is and how you can conquer them.

As the temperature rises, our homes get targeted by an influx of ants and cockroaches. When it’s REALLY hot, however, flies become our number one enemy.

Why in the summer?
At the end of autumn, flies prepare to overwinter. They remain in their pupal casings where they secrete “antifreeze protein” which protects them from the harsh winter elements. As summer approaches, the warmer weather signals the end of a long winter and fly populations will continue to build during the summer month.

Flies can travel hundreds of meters away from their breeding ground, especially when caught in a wind current, which makes the task of controlling your fly infestation a never ending one.

Most flies lay their eggs in moist, humid places that also serve as a food source for their larvae. Garbage, rotting vegetables, stagnant water and exposed food serve as the ideal breeding ground for this intruder.

Although house flies cannot bite, they carry diseases which have the potential to spread into our homes, contaminating our food which in extreme circumstances, could result in typhoid fever, diarrhea, cholera and pin worms.

How do you get rid of flies?
•    Remove garbage at least twice a week.
•    Keep garbage cans as far away from doors as possible.
•    Keep doors and windows closed.
•    Keep exposed food covered.

Bear in mind, however, that the key to successful fly control begins outside your home.

Helpful hints for outside:
•    Outside areas should be cleaned regularly - if you suffer from a very serious fly infestation, treating the premises with a mister or blower is helpful.
•    Outdoor sprays also work well to kill and repel flies. Spray all outdoor areas.
Most over-the-counter fly control products do not contain the same active ingredients as their professional counterparts.

It is too hot to keep the windows and doors closed. An airconditioner uses too much power. So for the price of an airconditioner you can install gause before the windows and doors. An added security bonus is when you add a tubular steel door with gause to your outside doors.

This article reads like an advert for Rentokil. I've bought the fly traps over the counter (just add water) and they work well.

The fly poisons that you mix with water in a pump-action sprayer works well. I usually add a cup of sugar to 8 litres and spray it on external walls, boundary walls and various plants. It works best to spray early in the morning. I do the same for ants. This works well but clean the sprayer thoroughly afterwards. If there is a more natural way (non-poisonous), please let us know!!! Good luck!

I agree with Randolph. I use the stinky traps between the house and the possible source of flies eg. stables, dog kennels, chicken coups etc and it keeps flies to a minimum. Also placed in the kitchen one of the insect spray dispensers that gives a puff every 7,5 15 or 30 minutes. Not over preparation areas though. Works better than spraying outside

Living on a smallholding with horses on our neighbouring properties, flies become a big problem esp during braais. Outdoor fly traps that you buy almost anywhere (fill with water) work well and we hang them over the wall where the horses are.
Indoors unsightly fly strips work the best, just change them regularly. Put in strategic places esp in the kitchen keeps the flies on the strip and away from your food.
Silly advice to keep doors and windows closed in Summer!

Try a plant called Yarrowroot - inside or outside - also supposed to be good is called a Vicks plant - it does work - available at most nurseries.

I've been considering installing gauze frames on all doors and windows for the summer, think this will work well in keeping them out (including any other bugs that are attracted by indoor lights at night). But would appreciate a non-toxic solution for when you're being pestered outside. Really not too keen on using so many pesticides! I've heard that citronella candles chase away mosquitoes but attract flies... so what to do?

Have found that the best anti fly programme is the sticky rope which runs under the length and bredth of the stable roofs. Then you simply wind the tape from the new, clean roll onto the "dirty" roll. Works brilliantly as it nails all the flies at night time when they get ready to perch under the roof. Available in kits with all the pulleys and braces.

What's wrong with a bug zapper. It works 100%

Agree with Randolf, Plaasmeisie etc. Redtop fly traps work very well. Also pick up dogs poos regularly

FLIES NO PROBLEM AT ALL ! Here is 5 ways to kill a fly without toxic and exspensive stuff and it also help for irritation and stressed up people ! 1: Use a piece of wood and play tennis with the flies = it's a lekke feeling if you launch the fly into the wall and it works. 2: Catch a fly and tear of its wings and put it in the neigbours postbox, now the fly have to walk all the way. 3: Take a four pound hammer and search for flies sitting around, now hit the fly with the hammer in the nek area, it will parralize the fly and it will die later on. Just keep in mind on what the fly sits, because if it sits on the tv then don't hit it too hard otherwise it will cost you a lot. 4: Train a wasp to be a fighter jet, then let it loose in the problem area. Just make sure the kids and wife are out of sight. (Put a wasp in a bottle in front of the tv, then show them old war movies. That's how you train a wasp)! 5: Catch the fly and mount it against the wall in the garage with sticky tape, then take your car put it in first gear and slam it into the wall ! (Just make sure the fly is mounted the correct hight)! All of the above methods surely must help for stress and it cost nothing if you do not overdo it ! Enjoy a fly-free day !!

This is a damn advert for rentokill. Shokcing that news24 disguises this as an article. I've had tremendous success with fly traps to eliminate flies. I place one at my compost heap. The thing is smally, so you can keep it as far from the place of residence as possible. The flies will find it, get trapped and killed. Don't know for flats and townhouses where space is limited, though, but I'm sure there is a different bait that can be used that will not smell as bad. Sure it seems like a dirtier solution than using poison but, if you read the lable of any domestic posion, the stuff can literally kill you if used improperly. All domestic poisons are hazardous to human and pet health: do not let the advertisers try to fool you about that. My dogs chewed up their flea collars (they chew up everything) and the nearly died. It cost me way too much to mention to keep them alive. I've not used any domestic pesticides, herbecides or any other poison since except for one can of spray for occational use. It lasts me more than a year. All organic stuff for the garden.

Koos - you should market your stress relieving methods - you are welcome to pop into our office for coffee anytime. Do any of your methods work for dealing with idiots??
Deborah Hubbard 11/5/2009 11:07:00 AM
I use the red-top traps and they work wonderfully well.

When I cook, I find flies really love the smell of lamb. They squat hopefully on the window above the stove, and I terminate them with extreme prejudice by using my vacuum cleaner. It's easy, and it's fun.
Mariana 11/5/2009 11:28:39 AM
Hi Koos your humor is excellent, it should work very well but I would not like to be around when you swing into operation,I would rather use the other methods, like the fly traps they do work
Gaelen 11/5/2009 5:02:45 PM
This is a very unhelpful article.

Hi Koos
Jy is tops. So op n verveling Vrydag is dit net die regte medisyne.
Kaapse meisie 11/6/2009 3:30:57 PM
You get an electrical appliciance, makes a blue light and zaps the flies. Works great, cost less than R200 and great for people like me who have allergies and hate to inhale any form of chemicals. Its only the zap sound that you have to get used to, dont use much electricity and works great as a night light.
Outside I think I will try to find the Yarrow plant or the Vicks plant.
Enjoy the summer !

doesnt say much about getting rid of flies.

Interesting article. I use vinegar to spray in the room and the smell keeps flys at by. What also works is if you plant tomato leaves. Research shows that the tomato leaves irritates the flys and that they will not enter a garden with leaves in it. An airconditioner also works because flys don't like the cold aire that is why we don't get flys in wintertime. Also to clean your backgarden from doggie business which attracts the flys. As a last resort you may spray but is does give sinus to older people and asmatic children.
Angus 11/9/2009 4:18:48 PM
I normally use pepper spray on the flies – it really does work. It’s a little bit more expensive than D%%M but it is much more fun to spray it around people.
