I’m not in the habit of reading sport columns – you know me, always keeping my little head busy with make-up and baking and boys – but when I saw the headline Why the Bulls will lose on Sport24 I just had to read it. I’m South African and doom prophesying is our national pastime after all.
The journalist responsible for this piece of wishful thinking, a certain Marc Hinton who might or might not be a Kiwi (remember, criticising our own is the OTHER great SA hobby), lists 5 rather namby-pamby reasons why the Bulls will lose to the Crusaders this Saturday.
Now as said before, I don’t know enough about rugby to refute his statements on a technical level and I would have left it for the boys to fight out if it wasn’t for point 2.
He calls it “The Soweto Factor”.
To be completely honest – and it pains me to say this – when I first heard the Bulls game would be moved from Loftus to Orlando I also had a twinge of doubt. Hey, I grew up in Pretoria, and for a moment I just couldn’t picture the horn-wearing, Liefling-singing blue-faced lot trekking to the heart of Soweto in their bakkies with the giant blue balls hanging off the tow bars.
But the loyal Bulls supporters have proved me wrong. Yay! Tickets have already sold out and there won’t even be space for an extra skinny cheerleader!
So I want to say, thank you Soweto for having us. And thank you Victor Matfield for rallying the troops. And thank you Pretoria (and surrounds) for going to support your team. My bloed is nou sommer blou.
For those of you who haven’t been to Soweto yet, you have the following to look forward to:
A) Not being cooked in a big pot. In fact, the Sowetans are known for their hospitality and friendliness.
B) A hell of a braai. The only place in SA that rivals Pretoria in its love for tanning a choppie is Soweto. So make sure you don’t miss a tshisa nyama.
C) Not only a fabulous vibe, but the locals will also know ALL the words to Shosholoza! Imagine.
So come on everybody. Let’s make the circle bigger.
Do you think Lili is right? Or do you think the Bulls will lose because they're not playing on Loftus?
