Wittiest Tweets about The Spear

"If The Spear fits, wear it…" South Africans take to twitter to voice their thoughts about the artwork which has caught our nation's attention.

There's no doubt that this week's hot topic is the Brett Murray artwork, currently showing at the Goodman Gallery, which features President Jacob Zuma with exposed genitals.

One thing is for sure: the painting has hit a nerve with everyone and diverse opinions have come to the fore.  Even Oliver Tambo's daughter, Tselane, jumped in and posted on a social network:

"So the Pres JZ has had his portrait painted and he doesn't like it… Do the poor enjoy poverty? Do the unemployed enjoy hopelessness? Do those who can't get housing enjoy homelessness? He must get over it. No one is having a good time. He should inspire the reverence he craves. This portrait is what he inspired. Shame neh! [sic]"

Here are the wittiest Tweets we found on the topic:

@SAPrezident: Joburg, imagine how small The Spear would be if I posed for a portrait right now *shivering*

@Crisp_jhb: I think they should have called the Zuma painting The Machine instead of The Spear...

@qudsiya: If The Spear fits, wear it. #Zuma

@Jonathan_Witt: Just read Zuma's affidavit regarding 'The Spear'. Shame, he doesn't realise that those aren't really his genitals. http://bit.ly/JHz96S

@samcowen: Thank goodness for 'The Spear.' Why waste moral outrage on hungry children or abject poverty when we have a tasteless picture to moan about.

@Morena_K: The Spear of the nation is sure tearing the Nation apart...

@TannieEvita: #Zuma Relax everyone! I have looked closely at The Spear with glasses on and can recognize a koeksister and two mosbolletjies when I see it!

@KevinMcCallum:  Perhaps JZ is worried that he will no longer be seen as the spear of the nation, but the butterknife of the country.

@Lottaimage: Thanks ANC for the press release about the 'vulgar' art depiction of #Zuma at the #Goodman gallery. Makes me curious to go and see it.

@09Chedea: The Spear is simply artistic license. No-one is above criticism for their actions-including the president! Bigger things to worry about in SA!

@ngalwas : Regardless of what u think of JZ, the so-called "spear" is degrading, insulting and borders on racist stereotyping. Artwork? Get the F out of here.

@mandyldewaal: Tried to get interview from Goodman Gallery re talk of death threats. No one would go on record.  Afraid of the spear?
