If you’re a regular reader of our weekly newsletter, you’re probably used to our fabulous editor Lili's weekly words of wisdom.
Well, this week is a bit different. See, I’m the new girl at Women24, and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to properly introduce myself to you, our wonderful readers.
So, here goes. Hello! I’m Jana Joubert, and I’m in charge of the Fashion and Beauty, and Careers and Money sections of Women24. I’ve been here since July 2012, after completing my Honours in Journalism and a six month internship.
And wow, what a ride it’s been so far!
I have learnt more in six months on the job than I ever did at varsity. Suddenly, I am a grown up. I had to learn how to be independent, both financially (paying rent is so painful) and emotionally (no more calling mom when something goes wrong).
I had to come to terms with the fact that 3-month-long student holidays were over, and from now on I would have to apply for leave. All of a sudden, falling ill meant asking someone else to cover for me.
When I popped a tyre and my geyser burst, I had to sort it out myself. Oh, and the cooking? I realised that eating two-minute noodles is great for the budget but so very bad for the figure. It was like first year syndrome all over again.
But it also obviously has its perks. First of all, you’re not a broke student anymore (although budgeting is vital if you want to keep it that way). Also, people see you as an adult – you can make decisions, sign important forms and apply for a home loan! Yay!
There’s no more sitting in dusty lecture halls, and your weekends belong to you - you can wake up when you want, go to bed when you want and even stay in your pj’s all day long.
But, enough about me.
Women24 is actually all about you, our loyal readers. You guys are the reason our team produces content that we hope will make you happy, make you think, or make you ask “Are you guys crazy?!” You see, it’s all about your input, your contributions and your stories.
I have to admit, it isn’t always easy. Being an online publication means that we’re permanently connected to our readers. If you don’t like something, you’ll say it. But, luckily, because you’re so awesome, when you do like something you’ll also say it.
This, by the way, always makes our day. Hearing that an article I wrote has somehow made a difference in someone’s life never gets old.
So, everyone, don’t stop doing what you’re doing, because without you Women24 wouldn’t be the biggest female-based lifestyle website in South Africa. And, without you, I wouldn’t be able to go home everyday feeling happy and blessed that I have such an awesome job!
