Name: Kerry Weavind
Job title: Owner of Haum of Yoga, but everything between janitor and CEO.
Job description: Head of all the possible business departments, admin, finance, PR, Marketing, HR, IT, ... and teacher and yoga practitioner. Through this, my left and right brain is kept in sync, otherwise I would go off an edge in either direction!
How did you get into your line of work?
I started working in finance, and I started doing yoga to manage my stress and my monkey mind. Then I mixed it up, combining finance and yoga - yogance! It’ s a marriage of the intellectual running of a small business and the heart of yoga.
Do you enjoy teaching yoga?
Yoga touches every part of the body and the benefits it brings to your overall wellbeing are vast and varied. Yoga works on all the systems in the body, aiding in a physical, mental and emotional detox. Yoga releases stress held within the body, such as nervous tension and anxiety, through various postures. This ancient art also enhances sleep patterns, increases energy, promotes peace of mind and strengthens the body to name just a few of its outstanding benefits.
What's the first thing you do when you get into the office?
If have my teaching hat on, I light some candles, incense and put the music on. If I have my business hat on, I switch on my computer and see what is happening in my world today and choose an area to focus on...usually the emails dictate the direction.
To do my job, you have to love...
Autonomy, personal responsibility, more responsibility, and mixing and matching between creativity and intellectual activity....as the more I play in one, the harder it is to switch to the other.
I spend most of my day…
Organizing... making sure everyone knows what they need to know, making sure I know what I need to know, and that all the systems behind the people know what they need to know!
What is the worst aspect of your job?
Complaints and admin, I have the disease to please so running my own business can be very daunting.
What is the best thing about your job?
I get to be creative and analytical both in teaching yoga and in the running of the business. The two influence each other perfectly. And I am my own boss so I dictate my perfect lifestyle.
The next job up from yours is?
Retired. And practicing more yoga!
What's the one thing no-one knows about your job?
Teaching yoga is almost as good as doing it.
What can you recommend to individuals who are interested in yoga?
Those wishing to bring yoga into their lives need not be intimidated by the thought of standing on their heads; all you need to get started are comfortable clothes, a yoga mat and a willingness to learn and participate. If life is feeling out of balance, attempt a yoga class, the aim of which is to leave you feeling centred, confident and energised.
