Our list of... highly recommended reads

From timeless classics, to modern day chick lit, our readers tell us about the books that melt their hearts time and time again.

To subvert the much-loved opening line from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, "It is a truth universally acknowledged", that any reader who is a romantic at heart, loves reading a good love story.

Over the years, I've read a number of reads that have made me swoon, sigh, gush and sob at the sweet, decadent and often heartbreaking tales found between the pages of romance novels.

From the masterfully written and wonderfully witty One Day by David Nicholls, to Jandy Nelson's exquisitely lyrical and poetic, The Sky is Everywhere, these love stories have left me with an unshakeable belief in love.

We've asked our Facebook fans and Twitter followers to tell us about their favourite romance reads. Check out the list below and make sure you give these books a read. There are a couple of gems in here.

Facebook readers:

Terri-Maree: "Aside from Gone with the Wind, there's a great new book called The Orchid House, which is the American release of Hothouse Flower. There's a wonderful romance in there."

Kerry:  "Dear John by Nicolas Sparks. It's one of my all time favourites."

Debbie: "Missing you Already by Pauline Mclynn. It's the kind of love story that  just sneaks up on you."

Leanne:  "Book and movie: Like Water For Chocolate"

Amanda:  "Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers and Sushi for Beginners by Marian Keyes."

Justine:  "Historical romance by Judith McNaught! Her books are amazing! For modern day romance - Stephanie Meyer's Twilight Saga. Her description of character emotion and development is fantastic."

Tracy: "The Time Traveler's Wife."

Leanne: "Gone with the Wind. I have read it about 5 times."

Karen: "The Notebook, without a doubt. Both the movie and the book. What thrilled me was that it was written about his grandparents."

Gail: "The Stephanie and Barbara Keating Trilogy - Blood sisters, A Durable Fire and In Borrowed light. It's the best love story I've read since the Thorn Birds! I really recommend those three books!"

Karin:  "The Bridges of Madison County. Understated and exquisite."

Our lovely Twitter folk also joined in on the conversation and added their recommendations to our list:

@Lousteyl: "One Day, by David Nicholls, because it's the greatest love story of our time (or mine at least)."

@Pisceandragon:  "Gone with the Wind. Two words: Rhett Butler.  That is all I have to say about that."

@Pisceandragon: "Pride and Prejudice."

@allthedaysof: If you don't mind a bit of sci-fi, then you should read The Host. It was so beautiful, it made me cry :)."
