4 essentials to a fulfilling life

Best-selling author Martha Beck shares four important principles to help you live the life you want.

Martha Beck is an amazing force of phenomenally good energy. You cannot help but feel a whole lot better around her.

The day before her tour kicked off I dropped by Martha’s accommodation to speak to her about the schedule for the week. It had been a difficult day and I was completely overwhelmed with bad energy and feelings of anxiety. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to mask my frayed nerves.

Amazingly she let me into her room. But what astounded me more was that within seconds — after being greeted like a long lost friend and grabbed into a bear hug — I felt free. Free from the stress, the anxiety and the desperate desire to get home and breathe. I just wanted to laugh and spend more time with her.

And therein started one of my most memorable author tours ever!

Let me start off by saying that if you stand firmly on the side of logic and what is rational then this might not be the book for you. Finding Your Way in a Wild New World  follows ancient wisdom and ideology, and teaches you to free yourself from the restraints of language.

According to Martha, everything that the modern world has taught us needs to be unlearned. Imagine my surprise when she told me that the modern classroom is the most hostile environment for the human brain. We learn better through motion and when we are one with nature.

Have I still got your attention?

Finding Your Way in a Wild New World is Martha’s attempt to get people to listen to themselves, not the language in their minds, but their spirit. Do what makes you feel good. Suffering is designed to motivate you to find the perfect zone.

Martha believes that when you start to suffer emotionally and physically, it is your body telling you that it is time to follow your true path. And she has made her career about doing things that make her feel better, because simply put she doesn’t like to suffer.

In this book Martha offers four technologies of magic to help you fulfil your true calling: Wordlessness, Oneness, Imagination, and Forming.

We live in a chaotic world where you are always striving to be better. You believe that getting a promotion will bring more money, greater respect and will provide security. But, you are exhausted, you take medication or see a therapist to help you cope, and you’re not really happy. Wordlessness is a state of peace and love.

It is the letting go of language, which restricts us. A silent mind allows the soul to connect with the living beat of the earth. In order to drop into a state of Wordlessness Martha asks that you “call up a happy memory, anything that makes you feel relaxed and in a state of compassion.

When you have no thoughts you are love.” And once you master the art of Wordlessness you can move into a state of Oneness.

Oneness according to Martha is “not just a belief, but an experiential knowledge” that nature, animals and humans alike are all one being. Through oneness you can communicate with everything that surrounds you. It can aid you to feel for what is missing in your life, and help to nourish your spirit.

The next step is Imagination, the ability to imagine your future and see what path you should be moving on. And Imagination needs heart, because in order to find your true path you need to be moving forward. And moving forward requires Forming.

Forming is an act of doing. It is the taking of those imaginings and converting them into reality. And in order to do this Martha wants you to LEAP (Love + Energy + Alignment = Power), “even if the next step seems scary and illogical and everyone thinks you are crazy, march forward.” Stop imagining and start living.

In the end it is not about what you want, but what you yearn for. To yearn for something is to love it before it exists. And Martha wants you to go for what you believe is impossible. If you don’t try, how will you ever know what your true purpose is?

So today why not make yourself a vision board of all the things you yearn for. Take time to sit in nature, play and rest. Because according to Martha Beck, “Your destiny is powerful and it looks for you, it knows you. Your destiny – love – is hunting you now. All you need to do is invite it into your life.”

What advice would you give to someone wanting to make a change in his/her life?
