No One Left to Tell by Karen Rose (Headline)
It all seemingly starts with Ramon Munoz. Taking the fall for a crime he didn't commit, Ramon has spent the past 5 years in prison. Having failed to get the help of local authorities, Elena, his wife, turns to private investigator Paige Holden, for help.
When Elena is brutally shot in front of Paige after getting hold of evidence that could clear Ramon's name, Paige finds herself thrown headlong into a case that opens a can of worms and leads Paige to suspect that what looks like a simple case of murder is just a cover up for something far bigger than she could have foreseen.
With the help of Grayson Smith, the very attractive prosecutor who previously worked Ramon's case, she soon learns that those responsible for putting Ramon behind bars, are willing to do anything, including killing off all possible witnesses, to make sure that he stays there.
And with no one left to tell, and with her own life on the line, there's no telling what could happen next.
It's been a while since I've read a good crime thriller, so when latest Karen Rose novel arrived on my desk, I decided to give it a go...
... and found, to my relief, that I actually quite enjoyed it.
One of the first things that tells me that I'm going to enjoy a book is how engaging the voice of the character is and in Paige Holden, Karen's created a kick-ass heroine who not only has a strong sense of self, but doesn't hesitate to put herself in harm's way when it comes to helping her fellow citizens.
Especially with her karate skills.
Brave and selfless, she doesn't hesitate to help the injured-beyond-help Elena, even though it puts her directly in the line of fire. We follow her journey as she finds herself becoming a target for digging into a case that quickly spirals into something beyond an innocent man being put behind bars.
The plot is certainly an interesting one, especially once we discover that the girl who was murdered, had motive for lying her way into a party she wasn't invited to. That there are a lot of people who keep turning up as corpses only add to the intrigue and quickly makes it apparent that someone is doing their best to cover up for someone while at the same time, covering his own tracks.
The fact that there is a possibility of dirty cops being involved also adds to the growing knowledge that everything is not as it seems and finding people who you can trust only adds to the difficulty of trying to get to the bottom of the case.
Things only get more interesting when Paige meets Grayson Smith, a prosecutor who was originally involved in the case. That there's an instant attraction and spark between the two become obvious to the reader and the rest of the characters in the book.
But Grayson has secrets of his own and those secrets only add to the danger surround them as it becomes clear that the persons involved will resort to sheer blackmail and murder to get both Paige and Grayson to back off.
With plenty of action, sizzling hot romance and intricate details of characters whose interspersed stories neatly tie-in to the explosive reason behind the original murder, Karen Rose has delivered a novel that will keep you reading right up until the end.
My only complaint?
I felt that at one stage that the story could have wrapped up a lot quicker than it did; with all the potential witnesses, it was a bit of a headache trudging through all their accounts to get to the reason behind why their stories were integral to the plot.
Having said that, when things are finally put into perspective, the ah-hah moment the reader experiences, certainly makes up for the times one feels as if the story has no end.
All in all, Karen Rose fans won't be disappointed with her latest offering. Do yourself a favour and get yourself a copy.
